How hard is it to replace the rear transmission seal on a 1987 Wrangler? Is this a job that a hobby machanic can do on the car port?
If you are talking about the seal at the rear of the tranny where the drive shaft goes into than it is fairly easy.
1.put something behind both tires so the vehicle does not try to roll away when you complete step 2.
2.take the drive shaft down.
3. take a flat head screw driver and a hammer.
4.take the screw driver and put it in the crack where the seal and tranny meet.
5.you will need to tap the screw driver into the crack until you can get a good grip on the seal with the screw driver.
6 you will need to pry out on the seal until you see it move.
7.do this all the way around until you can get the seal out.
8.make sure nothing is in the way of you putting in the new seal
9.put a little bit of tranny fluid on the new seal.
10 put the seal in place and lightly tap the seal. into the tranny.
11. put the drive shaft back together.

thank you, you just saved my 21 year old daughter about 300$. the shop estimated $369+ to do the job. Sounds like we can do it at home, thanks to your help. Now her jeep is sucking oil into the air filter canester, any ideas on how to stop this from happening?
