I had a e 28 M5 with the same problem, spent lots of time with it and found that the coolant temp sensor was reading wrong. also if your car has a hotmass air flow sensor in it and you using a k and n air filter the hotmass might have oil on it causing it to read wrong. had this problem with two m couple race cars I used to work on.

    good luck.

Sounds like you have a faulty crank angle sensor or cam angle sensor or both. try replacing them one by one or take it to a workshop with a diagnosis tool to verify.

if lights working on dash and it physically cranks turns over....my first port of call is to pull plug one by one off the spark plugs and check for a spark... I use a screwdriver and shove it up the leed where the plug goes and let it to earth when cranking and you should have a spark at each....if not theres the problem...coil pack... hows that answer for you I hope it gets you started

Car does not start on my 99 bmw m3 does not turn over either

Many items can cause it not to start:
1. battery voltage too low,
2. fuel pump not working-blown fuse, old, clogged fuel filter,
3. cam shaft sensor fault,
4. crank shaft sensor fault,
5. starter gone, and
6. on BMW M cars, if the oil level is down 3 quarts

Bmw m3 2003wont start

For about the last 20 years or so, most cars are equipped not to start if you press on the gas while turning the key. This is used for diagnostic purposes. DO NOT press on the gas peddle while attempting to start a fuel injected car.

Bmw m3 e36 idle problem

sounds like an EGR valve problem. it is probably clogged. get a tech to clean it or replace it and you should be good to go. if not it could be the MAF sensor or fuel delivery problem (fuel pump or injector problems?) or CPU.it is best to scan for diagnosis.

1997 BMW M3 3.2 EVO

Your fuel injection pressure is probably leaking down causing gasoline to leak into the cylinders and resulting in a hard hot starting condition due to "flooding" of the engine. Try holding the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor of the car like your trying to go maximum speed down the highway and crank the engine for 10 seconds or less at a time. That tells your computer to enter the "clear flood" mode and stop injecting gas into the engine. Ask your repair shop to measure the fuel pressure and see if the pressure is bleeding off too rapidly.
