Hello, Originally the truck was blowing out black smoke under high accelaration, it ran rough not stalling, engine light was on. The truck had recent tune up and i changed the plugs, the 2 oxy sensors were replaced and the intake manifold gaskets. The service engine light came on with 2 codes, lean and bank 1,,,, Once the truck is warmed up it starts to run rough, the exhaust has a strong rich/lean odor. One suggestion that i was givin is to replace the computer. the fuel pump pressure is 47, and the smoke test showed no signs of vacuum leak and i do not see the black smoke, it seems to lack power, not a very smooth acceleration and is poor on gas mileage. I have this posted on fix ya with another 98 dakota with a similiar problem.
I replaced the ect temp sensor and it did not correct the problem, I spoke to a few people and they said possibly the cat convertor, I brought to a shop and found a leak by a loose clamp and the convertor was no good. I replaced and cleared the codes and I ran it up to inspection and passed. Sorry absolutely no idea with my head under the bonnet -hood- Now has the opil been changed regular like every 5/6000 miles if its gungy and old then chances are you have knocked a big end out or two ,best advice is to trade it in quick whilst it still runs
If the check engine light is on, you would need to check the computer for trouble codes first. If the engine is fuel injected, it could be a bad injector. If it has a carb, it could be a sticking choke or an internal leak.
Could be a idle air problem. The injector could be leaking when you shut it off ..Try some injector cleaner see if it gets better..The idle air shouldnt run rough just idle real low or sometimes it will get stuck and idle high....Are you losing any antifreeze..If you are the 2.0 SOHC engine bad about leaking antifreeze into the cylinder and makes the engine run rough until it burns it out..See if you can see the smoke coming out when it happens..White smoke indicates antifreeze,,Black smoke indicates fuel..
sounds like possible a sensor went bad or is loosly connected. O2 sensor??? Also check the air filter. Sounds like whatever it is, is making the truck run rich----that would be the black smoke.
Black smoke is unburned gas. If the car is running fine besides the black smoke, it's most likely the Coolant Temperature Sensor. The part is roughly $20 and an easy fix.
How many miles is on the engine?
If it's close to 140,000 miles then it's over due for timing chain and timing guide change.
A loose timing chain will offset timing.
===
Before you do the next oil change. Add a motor flush to clean out the internal parts and free up the rings.
This is the inexpensive method to restore some of the lose compression.
====
Do a 5-10 minutes high rpm highway ran (NO REDLINE).
This will blow out the soot in the exhaust system.
====
Check your vehicle emission batch under the hood.
If it's from California or has California emission then let look for the catalytic converter.
Over time it can become restructed.
As a test,loosen the bolts at the collector pipe and do a short test ran.
Please post any additonal information on the commect window. I will follow up on it.
