100k miles, had same warnings after sitting and waiting on long train with air on, then the radiator-empty plug blew out and stripped the threads. Don't know why it overheated. Shop wants to replace radiator, hoses, clamps, thermo to tune of $700. Suspect this is just start of our problems...considering walikng away from this car. 100k miles, had same warnings after sitting and waiting on long train with air on, then the radiator-empty plug blew out and stripped the threads. if there were a crak in the radiator you would know....check the transmission coolant lines to be sure but ytans fluid would not clog the radiator nor make the car run hotif there were a crak in the radiator you would know....check the transmission coolant lines to be sure but ytans fluid would not clog the radiator nor make the car run hot

Whatever you do, NEVER allow this engine to overheat and always use the correct antifreeze (DEX COOL) or you will damage your heads severly. The heads were made from aluminum so there is a very serious warping issue on the 1998 Cadillac Northstar engines. There should have been a recall but wasnt, ended up costing me 3 thousand USD to fix the engine problems I had but she now runs fine. I only had the car 4 months before this happened so someone prior to me owning evidentaly let it overheat on too many occassions and I had no choice but to fix cause I was still paying on the car!! Good luck
The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system. There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line. With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage. The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side to near the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.
do the heater core coolant supply hoses both get hot at the firewall in the engine compartment? if yes then you have a defective temperature control blend door actuater motor.
flush your radiator first.with the thermostat out you should see the water moving if not bad water pump.this engine needs the thermostat to function properly and either a 50/50 coolant or straight coolant so it does not boil over.also make sure your fans are coming on
pull codes from on board diagnostics turn key on not running press and hold hot button on temp and off at same time till dash lights up write down codes respond with all computer codes i will help you determine prodlem and try to fix
