We have a chripping/squeek sound under the hood of our 97 chev tahoe. We have replaced the belt tensioner, the center pulley and the alternator. The sound would go away for a day then come back. I think the power steering pulley is the problem, can we just replace the pulley or do we have to replace the whole power steering pump? Please help us my husband is going crazy w/this sound.

I can see why you replaced the tensioner. This is the most common cause of this problem and you might not believe how many questions I have been getting about this problem! This is a long shot but, it's worth a try. Spray some silicone lubricant into the body of the tensioner. there is usually a spot in the back of the body. This problem can even happen to new tensioners if they have been sitting on the shelf for a long time. If that's not it, then it's possible to replace the power steering pulley with a special puller that is available at most part stores. you might have to take the pump off to do this, depending on the location of the pump. Before you do that, look at the condition of the other pulleys if there are any more. Look at the belt, even if you replaced it. I hope this is helpful and it keeps your husband from going crazy. I feel his pain.

    There is one more thing that I forgot to add. This procedure can help you determine what the cause is. Take that same can of silicone lube and spray a small amount into the direction of belt travel (clockwise when looking at the front of the motor) with the engine running. Always wear safety glasses when performing this procedure. If the noise goes away, then it's not the belt tensioner. Look for something wrong with the belt or one of the pulleys. If it doesn't. then it could still be the tensioner or possibly the AC pump pulley and clutch assembly. Good luck!

Without the belt do all the pulleys turn easy. Power steering, water pump, alternator, and tensioner pulley. There is probably only one way the belt will stay on but make sure you have the smooth side to the smooth pulley and the grooved side to the grooved pulleys. See if any of the pulleys have and wiggle in them.

There is tension held on belt by a pulley. You need to release tension and slip belt of nearest pulley. Use a socket and ratchet on the tension pulley to release tension. Make sure there is a diagram of belt routing before you take belt off. Make one yourself if there is none under the hood

Change a serpentine belt on a 97 lincoln
3.8L Engine
  1. Insert a 1/2 inch flex handle in the square hole in the tensioner. The tensioner has a square hole cast into the rear of the tensioner body directly behind the pulley. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and remove the belt from the pulleys.

NOTE As an alternate method, a 16mm socket can be placed on the tensioner pulley bolt and rotated clockwise to remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Following the schematic on the decal under the hood, loop the drive belt over all the pulleys except the alternator pulley.
  2. With the belt installed properly on all except the alternator pulley, rotate the tensioner as described above and install the belt on the alternator pulley. Ensure that all the V-grooves make proper contact with the pulleys.

4.6L Engine
WARNING Do not allow the drive belt tensioner to snap back as damage to the drive belt tensioner or personal injury could result.


  1. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise with a breaker bar installed in the 3/8 inch square hole in the drive belt tensioner.
  2. Lift the drive belt over the idler pulley flange and remove the drive belt.
To install:
  1. Following the schematic on the decal under the hood, position the belt over the pulleys, except the idler pulley.
  2. Rotate the tensioner as described above and install the belt on the idler. Ensure that all the V-grooves make proper contact with the pulleys.

What is the process to replace the belt on a 97 continental? from top or bottom? do I have to remove any parts from the engine?
there is no real "procedure". the system consists of a spring loaded tensioner and the belt. make sure when you install the belt you can read the belt as if you were reading a book. if it is istalled the other way it stands the possibilty of squeeking. many other technicians will tell you that is not true, im here to tell you that i have proven this not only on mercedes benz but several other models as well. have also cured squeeks others could not. the tensioner will only go one way simply go that direction and remove the belt. make sure you note the routing of the belt or you will not be happy. many vehicles now days have the routing somewhere under the hood.

Replace a serpentine belt on a 97 ford taurus
use a 15mm box wrench on the nut retaining the tensioner pulley to pry the tensioner 'arm' against the spring to release belt. note belt routing on decal under hood,or make a sketch,to aid in replacement.
on OHV engine rotate clockwise
on OHC rotate counter clockwise
be sure belt is completely seated on pulleys

2006 kia sorento makes a squealing sound under
It is either the tesnioner or the belt....easy way to find out is to spray the pulley that has no grooves....that's the tensioner. Spray it with WD-40 or equivalent, in the middle of the pulley. That is the bearing housing. Spray only that first. Start the motor...if it goes away, then you have found your problem. Try not to spray the belt.

If it still squeals, spray the belt with the engine running. If it squeals, replace the belt.

Has anything been done to the motor recenlty? If so, one of the pulleys may be a little off-centered.

Let me know what you find.

Alternator belt
Under the hood, on the radiator support or on the underside of the hood you'll find a black label with a white belt routing diagram. In order to replace the belt you must back off the tensioning pulley using a ratchet handle with a 3/8" drive spindle. The pulley often has a square slot into which the ratchet handle will fit. If your tensioner does not have this then it will be necessary to provide the correct size socket to fit the center hold-down bolt on the tensioner. The tensioner will only move easily in ONE direction with the tool. Just back the tensioner off enough until you are able to remove the belt from one of the upper pulleys(usually the alternator). Take extra care when relieving the tensioner after removing the belt. The spring is very strong.Before installing the new belt, make sure and turn by hand ALL of the pulleys to check for a seized bearing or a worn bearing. This is generally why the belt came off to begin with. All pulleys should turn smoothely and quietly. Thank you, Dana

The routing diagram is under the hood.
  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done

This procedure is for anybody who has has trouble getting a serpentine belt on. It's easy and doesn't require a prybar.
