It sounds like it is in limp-in mode. If possible, get your vehicle to a place where you can get an OBD-2 test and get the error codes. Autozone and I believe Advance Auto parts will do a free code test on request; the point is that this test should be cheap or free.
Once you have the codes, come back here or simply Google the codes, made model and year of your vehicle and you'll have a good idea of where to start.
If it starts out in 2nd gear & dosn't shift, it is probably in a limp in mode. the system will need to be diagnosed & computer satisfied. sometimes disconnecting the battery will reset the computer & allow the trans to shift untill it sees the problem again. I recomend getting the codes read first so the memory will not be erased.
