Honda CRV 1999 model 4WD (SUV). Vibration when power applied, shaking car at high speed and thumping/bumping at low speed. Stops immediately when power backed off; not evident coasting down hill. Vibration/thumping occurs at all speeds, and seems at about road wheel frequency. Comes and goes; not consistent. Not evident with hand break on and clutch slipping in either 1st or reverse gear (to test engine under load while wheels stationary).

    Thanks hotchevy1965. The thumping is in proportion to engine power; not evident at any speed when decelerating, and worsens as power increases (acceleration or steady hill climb). Front shock absorbers replaced last year. Recent major service including new timing belt and "tight tappets" adjusted fixed it for a while, but problem soon returned. Left drive shaft changed, and again reduced it. Problem still there, but much better; waiting to see if it stays fixed this time.

THUMPING NOISE COULD BE BLISTER OR BUMP ON THE TIRE,IMPROPER SHOCK ABSORBER OR STRUT DAMPER ACTION.

    Thanks hotchevy1965. The thumping only occurs when engine supplying power. Not evident at any speed when decelerating. Thumping increases in proportion to engine power input; worse when accelerating or steady hill climb. Front shock absorbers replaced last year. Recent 200,000km service including replacing timing belt and adjusting "tight tappets" fixed problem for a while, but came back in a week or so. Replacing left drive shaft also greatly improved it, but it is still there; waiting to see if it comes back fully again. Mechanic stumped and suggesting I should take it to a Honda dealer workshop.

    LOOK FOR LOOSE DRIVE SHAFT BOLTS.IF ALL BOLTS TIGHT. YOU COULD HAVE WORN UNIVERSAL JOINT BEARINGS.

    Thanks hotchevy1965. The CV joints in the left drive shaft had a little bit of play in them, but not much. So far the problem has not come back fully, so maybe that was it, and replacing the right side drive shaft will be worth it, if it takes away the last bit of the problem. Will wait another week and see.

Warped brake rotor usually cause high vibration at high speeds. But you can also feel it at lower speeds. But bad ball joints and tie rod end will cause vibration at high speeds. Ball joints will pop at pot holes, sometimes. Tie rods can be felt in the steering wheel at a stop. Move the wheel slightly to the left and right, you can feel/hear a tap as you turn it.

I have a 1999 Chevy Silverado 1500 exc 4wd at speeds over 50 and it starts to shake and vibrat and really loud what could it be?
Wheel balance problems usually occur at speeds above 40mph. Also check driveline u joints for problems, but these usually show up when taking off and vibration at lower speeds. Check wheel rims for being bent and tires that are free of bumps or out of round.

2002 olds intrigue shakes while idling with brake on in drive
The cause is too low an idle and engine is starving for fuel so it shakes like that.The thumping sound you hear is most likely just the exhaust being too close to the floor amd bumping against it when in drive with brake on.You said yourself that it stops when you put it in nuetral,well the engine speed goes up when there's no stress on it.With some one holding the brake and it's sitting there thumping,set the idle speed up just enough to make the engine stop rocking that way.

What is the cause of continual thumping (appears to be coming from back of car) and violently shaking?
Many times, rear tires that are out of round or severely cupped or feathered, or that are out of balance can create this type of issue. My first recommendation would be to have them and the wheels on the rear of the car inspected. There may not seem like there is much wrong visibly if you look at just the tread of the tires, but a good tire tech can spin them up and give you some solutions, and the inspection itself is inexpensive. Increased vibration from a vehicle indicates worn out engine supports. This vibration often disappears when revving the engine high, but is very noticeable at low revs.

You can have these inspected and possibly replaced to reduce the vibration cominf from your engine.
