Thanks. That's what I'd hope it would be. Trouble is, I can't get under the car while its parked in the carport & I can't move it to get it up on ramps to have a look. Suppose I'll have to get it towed to the mechanic.

try taking the middle of the centre console out and looking down from the top.

I managed to jack it up enough (supported on jack stands of course) to get under it & found the linkage had fallen off. I've pushed it back on so it works enough to get it to the mechanic to get fixed properly.
    Thanks for your help.

Replaced gear linkage cable bush, now stuck in park any help on BA falcon 2003

Check that the cable is routed correctly and didn't get hooked around something where it doesn't belong. Is it possible to put the bushing in backwards so it won't rotate properly? Also, check the linkage position to make sure it is properly synchronized with the shift lever. Finally, make sure the transmission position indicator matches the shift lever position. If you can move the lever in the wrong direction out of park, that would indicate one of the above misalignments.

I've been there and done that ...

1999 GMC Sierra stuck in drive. What do I do?

First off, set the parking brake, raise vehicle so you can get under it. Remove the shift linkage from the transmission and manually move the shift lever to park. Then try moving the shift mechanism inside the car to park and then through each gear (engine off of course). See if the mechanism sticks, if so, probably a broken tab on the locking mechanism for the shift lever in the steering column. If it moves freely, try the lever on the transmission back and forth through the gear range to see if it sticks. If it sticks, or you can't initially move it by hand, you have a transmission problem that requires trained individuals to fix. If it moves freely also, try lubing the cable with silicone spray at all contact points, especially where it enters and exits any cable sheathing. (spray into sheathing well) If both move freely independent of each other, it may just have been in a bind, put both shifter and tranny lever in park and reattach the shift cable, Then try the gear range again from inside the vehicle.

91 Dodge Spirit stuck in low gear, won't shift out.

Sounds like you need a new shift cable. Remove the shift cable from the linkage on the transmission. If the transmission linkage moves freely back into the park position and the shift lever inside the car still will not move back into park than the cable is bad. If the transmission shift linkage will not move back into park with the cable removed than the transmission will need to be pulled apart to service the shift rod.

Gear shifter does NOT shwitch from park and break

SHIFTER LOCKED IN PLACE

  1. Remove the instrument panel cover below the steering column, then remove the steering column shrouds to gain access to the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) solenoid. The solenoid is part of the interlock cable assembly.
  2. Disconnect the wire connector from the rear of the BTSI solenoid.
  3. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the ON position.
  4. With the brakes applied, try moving the shifter out of the PARK position.
    • If the lever now moves freely in and out of PARK, perform the Circuit Test below.
    • If the shift lever still does not move from the PARK position, remove the BTSI solenoid from the shift lever assembly. If the shift lever now moves freely in and out of the park position, the BTSI solenoid is faulty and the interlock cable must be replaced. If the shift lever still does not move from the park position, the problem is in the shift lever assembly or the ignition interlock cassette
