You mean that the starter is turning (cranks) the engine but the engine won't start? Be sure it is getting fuel. Turn the key to the on position and you should hear the fuel pump in the fuel tank run for a few seconds. If so that is good. If the fuel is being delivered then possibly you have no spark which usually is the electronic ignition module. The only way to test it is to replace it. Your timing chain or belt could be broken or "jumped" as the third possibility. I am leaning toward ignition module being bad as they just die without warning and nothing can revive them.

My 98 ford explorer wont start all the sudden, just one click...all the lights and stereo work...just suddenly wont start...what do i do

One single click every time you turn the key to the crank position is a pretty good indicator that the starter is bad. You can confirm this by checking for power on the small red wire while a helper holds the key in the crank position and making sure that the large red wire has battery power as well (this only works when the vehicle will not start). If both of those check out fine than replacing the starter will likely fix the problem.

Why won't my 98 Ford explorer start? My theft

try using a spare key.

Either way if it starts or not with the spare key a trip to the ford dealer may be in your future. occasionally the security system will forget your keys. You can program them yourself but you will need two keys that work. If you have two keys that work let me know and I'll let you know how do do it.

If you do not have two keys that work than the ford dealer will have to reprogram your keys into the security system.

My1998 explorer just quit it won't start i got new

The 98 explorer is equipped with a power surge system to protect internal vehicle wiring, what this means is that if there is a short in the vehicles wiring the alternator will disengage. A way to tell if it is faulty wiring is to pull all the fuses out of the fuse block and try to start it if the engine turns over the problem is internal wiring. If not then you have to put all the fuses back.

2000 explorer won't start cranks OK, drove it to the store with no problems got back in won't turn over to start.

Try some starting fluid, if it wants to run then you need to check the Inertia switch. The location of this switch is behind the passengers foot kickpanel.

There is a Reset button that you push and it will reconnect the fuelpump. Please rate my info. You can try the Reset without testing with starting fluid but the fluid verifies fuel starvation as the problem.

2002 Ford Explorer ran out of gas put gas in and won't restart. replaced fuel pump and fuel filter still won't start. Cranks but won't start

Most Fords have a fuel reset button. When you ran out of gas you tripped the circuit. Most of the time the button will be on the passenger side by the kick panel. The exact location should be in your owners manual or your local library or auto parts store will have a copy of one for your specific vehicle.

Have a 98 ford explorer and it won't start tryed to jump it nothen. Put a starter in and still won't click ove it sounds like it dead but if I play with the power distreber box I'm dash lights...

it could very well be the starter solinoid mounted on fender under hood. most fords are setup this way. to test it -- You could use jumper cable to jump the two large studs on the solenoid together, which should make the starter crank the engine, assuming the engine can rotate freely. If jumping the solenoid works, then the solinoid is probably bad. have a good day !!
