CHECK ALTERNATOR BATTERY FEED WIRE AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR WIRES IF THEY TOUCH GROUND IT WILL SHORT OUT ALTERNATOR IN A QUICK SECOND. IF YOU DISCONNECT POSITIVE WIRE FIRST IT WILL SHORT OUT ALTERNATOR.CHECK ALTERNATOR WIRES FOR FRAYED BROKE PLACES.MAKE SURES RED 10 GAUGE BATTERY FEED WIRE NOT GROUNDING OUT OR TOUCHING ANY PART OF THE ENGINE.BESURE TO PUT ALTERNATOR FEED WIRE IN FLEXIBLE CONDUIT SO IT WONT GROUND OUT.AUTO PARTS STORE SALE FLEXIBLE CONDUIT FOR WIRES.
Several things could cause an alternater to fail, engine coolant for example (like if your engine were to overheat and spray out) or even things like a high watt aftermarket stereo or amplifier. with this being the second new alternator I would first have the battery tested at a local parts store, most can do it in 5 minutes or less and it's usually free. also I would check and clean or replace the battery cables or ends if they are corroded or broken.
and if you happen to have a high power aftermarket amplifier or stereo you might want to see about a higher amperage alternator
and avoid driving through high water (a common problem around here)
