Several things could cause an alternater to fail, engine coolant for example (like if your engine were to overheat and spray out) or even things like a high watt aftermarket stereo or amplifier. with this being the second new alternator I would first have the battery tested at a local parts store, most can do it in 5 minutes or less and it's usually free. also I would check and clean or replace the battery cables or ends if they are corroded or broken.

and if you happen to have a high power aftermarket amplifier or stereo you might want to see about a higher amperage alternator

and avoid driving through high water (a common problem around here)
good luck

Montero sp not charging

sometimes "new" alternators and batterys are bad from the factory, or sent out with a defect. Check your battery connections from battery to alt/starter, check connection of battery ground. Check ground from engine to frame or body.

2001 mitsubishi montero sport 4wd battery and brake lights are on.

I doubt it is the belt because if the belt is slipping you should hear it.
The alternator could be about to crash and not charging at lower speeds.
You would check alternator output to find out.
The battery and brake warning lights are on the same circuit.
