Car has thumping noise while turning right. Took off wheels and turned drive shafts. Appears to be coming from left half shaft where it goes into trans. New half shafts installed about three months ago due to torn boots. No problems until 3 days ago.

Hi if its not driving and noise on side of car sounds like u screwed a drive shaft , jack up wheels and try to turn wheel in park, if turns shaft stuffed .jeff
Sounds to be your c/v joint. AXLE SHAFT ALSO KNOWN AS A HALF SHAFT WHICH COME OFF TRANSMISSION AND ATTACH TO THE WHEELS. When worn are designed to let you know they are worn. Hope this helps
check ur axle or half shaft it goes from the transmission to the wheel if they break it wont go anywhere it has rubber boots on each end of yhe shaft with universals in them
Probably a bad CV joint on one of your drive axles to the front wheels. You have two drive axles coming out of the transaxle, one to each front wheel, and both have an inner CV joint where they enter the transaxle, and an outer CV joint where the axles fit into the wheel hub. (A CV joint is really like the old U-joints, serving the same purpose.) A clicking noise on turning is usually a badly worn outer CV joint. The cheapest fix is to buy a remanufactured half-shaft for your car. That is the axle shaft with both CV joints at each end inspected and reconditioned with new grease and CV boots installed. You need to know which side is bad before buying. The half-shaft is sold ready to install. Someone with good mechanical skills will need to remove the old one and replace it with the new reconditioned axle shaft, or half shaft as they are also called. The last time I bought one (about two years ago) the cost was reasonable- about $65.00. That is less than the cost of one new CV joint. Hope this helps you out.
If it's a 4WD then your front universal joint(s) on the front wheel drive shafts are on the way out and should be replaced. They should be replaced as a pair (both sides) so that you have uniform wear, but you can replace the bad one to solve the problem. The noise should be coming from one side or the other, indicating which one is going bad, but it's most likely the right sive CV joint. Also, it the rubber boot on the end of the driveshaft is damaged or torn, that would point to the offending joint. Your parts store should be able to sell you a reconditioned half shaft to fix the problem. Replacement can be done at home with decent tools.
Probably a, or both front CV (constantly variable) joints in the front half-shafts (the driveshafts that run from your transmission to both your front wheels) are going bad. Not a too uncommon problem. They run about 150-160$ Canadian dollars a piece for remanufactured front shafts (from NAPA Auto Parts). Not too sure about labour cost, could be a few hundred dollars.
