1998 ford explorer 4.0L engine E type Water in oil and engine runs terrible. It overheated and replaced water outlet pipe. Now the engine barely starts and the oil is full of water.Started with water dripping out of tail pipe but now there is no water out of tail pipe but the engine is full of water. Is this the head gaskets and how do you tell what side is bad? Is this the gasket or the heads? What is the average cost to have work done? It probably is not worth repairs if done at shop. What is the best way to diagnose problem or problems? Block, heads, intake manifold or gaskets?

What engine? Has thermostat been changed? You say it has not overheated since, but water not circulating. If water/coolant wasn't circulating, it would be overheating. Please explain a little more or confirm why you think that.

Hav changed water pump 2 yrs. ago, just changed water outlet because of leak, annd changed therm. temp still gets hot...no water in oil... what could this be?

Carefully feel the radiator directly after shutting the engine off it should be hot at the top and get generally a little cooler as you go down from side to side with no cold spots, if there is a cold spot the radiator is plugged and needs to be cleaned or replaced. Do you have a fan shroud? Check your thermostatic clutch on the fan blade does it wobble? Any of these can cause overheating. Hope this helps.

HAve a 1996 Ford explorer v-8 that is overheating,

With cool engine... open radiator cap and look inside radiator. Do you see lots of sediment and calcium growth on radiater tubes? If yes, a coring may be needed. If only slightly bad, a radiator flush may be needed... then refill with 50 percent antifreeze.

Good thermostat, cleaned cooling system, non-leaking water pump, good water flow via water pump... nothing else left (unless you put the thermostate in backwards)..

Oil keeps getting in to the water

if thats the case you should have water in the oil also, that means you have a blown head gasket

Check engine light is on, small amount of white smoke coming from the tail pipe, and engine temp running at the halfway point on the temp dashboard

Head gaskete is going bad due to overheating, probably caused by bad water pump or thermostate. Check the oil for coolant (oil will be milky) coolant for oil. Check engine is coming because there is misfire in cylinder(s) or O2 sensor going bad. Trouble codes scan can be done free of charge in local Autozone store (if you are in US).
Hope that helps
