Had this problem after replacing water pump. Hard system to bleed. small bleeders on heater hoses and one near the front of the engine.
VW vortex has a post on cooling system bleeding. check to see if both heater hoses are hot. if so check the climate control: push econ and mode at the same time. it will give you codes. The blend door can be checked for freedom of movement.
I would also have the system power flushed . The termostat on this cars can be a very expensive item to replace..probably 6 hrs of labor at $80.00 hr. The irony of all , the part cost is less than 30.00 dollars.Have it flushed for $100.00 to 150.00 dollars
Try changing the cooling system thermostat. Befor you go to any great expense.

I have this problem too, antifreeze is fine, blower works, but blows cold not heat
I have the same problem with my 2001 passat v6. A/c blows when I turn in the heat.
Ditto, almost. I have a 2002 Passat 4Motion wagon. When the Climate Control is set to "Auto", my AC seems to stay on blowing cool air (not necessarily cold air) no matter what the outdoor/indoor temperature is. If I change the blower speed -- which automatically turns off the Auto setting -- this seems to allow the heat to come on as long as the temperature setting warrants it. Similarly, if I use the "Econ" setting, the heat will come on if desired indoor temperature is set high enough. Thus, for now I conclude that the problem must be with the Auto setting and is related to some sort of malfunctioning indoor temperature detector, though I have not researched this yet nor talked with the mechanics at the dealer (which, I confess, I'm a little afraid to do!)
2001 V6 4motion - I get cool (not cold, not warm)air when the climate control is set on auto or manually set at 80 and it is calling for heat. Checked the hoses to the heater core and they are at opperating temp. I assumed that the doors in the heater core for blending air were not working, however, they seem to be working fine. I will look into the a/c therm. Thoughts on an good assembly or service manual that is available for download? Can you offer direction on were to find the a/c ther on the car? This is a new / used car for my wife in the winter and all I can say is the heated seats are nice, but not enough to keep you warm a 10 deg.
I didi change the thermostat but still it is not working.
Me too - I took my 2001 in last week, and my mechanic said that there was a leak in the oil cooler which had caused oil build up in the coolant reservoir. He replaced the reservoir, but the car will need a new oil cooler (and a timing belt adjustment). If this is not done, eventually oil will flood the system. This is a trustworthy, reputable mechanic - he says he will do it for $1600.
the car does not blow cold or hot air nothing at all
