Before replacing the module ($$$$) check the temperature sensor at the front of the vehicle behind the bumper or grill. A reading of -40 indicates a high resistance (NTC resistor sensor). This is probably due to water ingress on a connector causing the high resistance. But could be a bad sensor too. You can also check the module by unplugging the temperature sensor and shorting the two wires that go back to the module together. Shorting the two wires together should show an off scale high reading like 120 or 130 degrees. If it does then the module is OK the problem is the wiring or the sensor. You can use this method to check the wiring all the way up to the module incase there is high resistance in the wiring between the module and the temperature sensor.

Knocking noise on my 2001 grand cherokee caused by overheaing

check your transmission level fluid and engine oil level. might be leaking and need some refill. make sure that your thermostat is working or maybe not, check your fan if it is spinning in the right time which your coolant temperature sender sense a very high temperature. or get the lowest temp sender sensor rating.

Temp gauge goes to full hot while at Idle

Check the auxiliary cooling fan for operation. As the engine temp rises, it should kick on to bring the temp down. U may have a bad motor on the fan, or more likely a bad fan switch.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine temg gauge not working

If you changed the coolant temperature sensor and it had a 5 volt ref signal to it then you replaced the wrong part. You need to replace the coolant temperature sending unit.  The coolant temp "sensor" is an input to the ECM for your fuel injection system. The coolant temp "sending unit" is for coolant temp reading at the gauge, It is an NTC switch (negative temperature coefficient) which means as temp increases/resistance decreases.

All that info is actually relayed from the PCU which is expensive to replace.
Have a certified dealer look at it before you go replacing parts.
