My 98 Nissan Altima won't start. It has a brand new starter, brand new spark plugs, a new alternator, and a new battery, so I know it has nothing to do with any of them. The distributor was replaced at an auto mechanic shop just to see if that was the problem, and the car still wouldn't crank. You can turn the key in the ignition and all it will do is crank, but the engine won't turn over. If you work with it for a while it has a chance of starting if you hear that the engine sounds like it's about to turn over and press the gas peddle then it will crank, but normally if I try this all it does is run the battery down because it takes a really long time. If you spray something flammable such as carburetor cleaner into the breather I guess.. the hole in the side of the engine.. the car instantly starts like there's no problem.

Instead of guessing what the problem is its cheaper to take it to a mechanic and put a tester on it. Could be a simple thing like a gas filter or your choke not working properly. If it starts when you shoot flammable stuff in the carbs that tells me it is likely something to do with the fuel such as carburetor and yes the fuel filter. Yes even a bad fuel pump. Please do not guess what it is as that will cost you a lot of money. Companies make a lot of money off of people who guess and say I think i need what ever.

Seems as if the system isnt priming itself when you first move the key to ON in which the fuel pump would kick on for just a moment to prime the carb with fuel if it doesnt sound like the fuel pump is starting at that moment there might be a problem with the fuel pump or a relay going to it or maybe a fuse relating to the fuel pump

SOURCE: my car turns over but will not start

1.Check for spark.
2. check to make sure ing.wires are not crossed or mixed up.
You have gas so its not the fuel pump.
3.try taping the starter with a hammer while some one you trust turns the key.If she starts up this would be a bad solinoid and you need a new starter.

SOURCE: my car won't start I don't hear it crank

Get a test light, and see if your starter has battery power, (big wire/stud) on starter. itll light up if you do. then there should be a little wire. thats your igntion switch wire. have someone start your car while you testing the little wire. if the light comes on. then your starter is probably bad, even if its new they still can be bad. If it doesnt light up then, you need to locate the starter relay in engine compartment,I should have one. test to see if it clicking when you try to start it. youll feel it. If not pull it out and test to see if you have power. do the same test with someone starting it and see if you light comes on. If it comes on then replace the relay. and you could try and see if your ignition fuse is ok. I hope this gets you started. if not right back were your stuck at.

SOURCE: 1998 Nissian Altima Not starting

Nothing by either party was said about the starter. The battery and wires can all be in great shape, and if they are and the owner hears a clicking noise when trying to start it its a pretty good bet they may have a starter that's locked up.

One good 'ole trick on those starters. If you can reach the starter, a couple of sharp rapes with a hammer will have it starting again, then you know it time to replace the starter.

Won't start because it doesn't fire. Starter and alternator are fine...

the starter and alternator have nothing to do with fire. if the engine turns over but wont run, the stater, battery are ok. there are several things to check, spark to spark plugs? fuel pressure? fuel injector pulse? a shop will need to verify and recommend repairs
