I dont know what size engine do you have for better info but practically for fire you need.
1 gas
2 air
3 spark.

if you have missfire on second cylinder spark plugs and coil or cable(depends on model) good place to start. if you have single coil top of each spark plugs you can replace the coil from another cyclinder like 2nd cylinder to 4th and read new misfire code if misfire shows on 4th cylinder you need a new coil, if you have v6 dont mix cables use spark tester to check 2 cylinder cable.
if everything looks good next step will be fuel injectors.good luck

If your getting a P0302 ( cylinder #2 misfire detected), the first thing to check is the spark plug. If it's new then the next thing to check is the plug wire. If it has individual coils, then swap it out with another one and see if the misfire moves too. If so then the coil is faulty.

I have a p0303 trouble code on my 1999 Passat. Missfire on #3 cylinder. Coil is ok, I'm lost.

coil packs very prone to failing... check compression for good readings (at least 100 - 120psi) if okay try new spark plug as these can fail under load and its the cheapest part to replace to eliminate. if misfire still present swap cylinder 3 coil with cylinder 1 coil and see if fault code moves to cylinder 1. hope this advice helps

1996 VW Passat - Random cylinder miss fire, worse

Pop the heed, see the air box on the very left? On top of that box is the Ignition Control Unit. Little black square w/ winds about 1/2"
thick....

That is the problem. Or Your MAF sensor...
I don't know how to chech the Ignition Control Unit with out the proper tester.

But the MAF is located directly below in side the box.
If you POP off the large hose that comes out of the front of the air box. You can see the MAF, spreay it some contact cleaner for electronics not BREAK CLEANER>>>>>>.

Missfire

DD-
A lot possibilities here, so let's narrow it down as much as possible:
How many miles on the engine?
Has it been well maintained, i.e.: oil changes, tune-ups?
Did the problem start all at once, or did it gradually appear?
When not idling, does the engine perform well, get decent fuel economy, use any oil?
If the engine is mechanically sound, I would suspect a disconnected or leaking vacuum line. Check under the hood with the engine on and listen for a "hissing" noise in the area of the intake manifold... If you have some extra vacuum hose, you can use that in the fashion of a stethoscope... put one end in your ear and probe around the vacuum line area with the other end. Any leaks will come in loud and clear this way.
Other posibilities include bad sensors, leaky fuel injector(s), uneven compression (usually due to poor valve sealing), blown head gasket or cracked head, poor manifold sealing, bad spark plugs/plug wires/distributor cap/rotor.
The good news is that most of the larger auto supplies now offer free computer diagnostic scans, which should help narrow down the range of possible causes and give you more detailed information as to what's going on u nder the hood.
Hope this helps and good luck with the Passat!
