I have a 2002 Mazda Tribute auto, it will not select any gears. It was driving fine until the main fuse was pulled while it was idling and now it has no forward or reverse gears. I have checked the codes and it comes up with faulty ECT but this is to do with the cooling system. Any ideas on what could be causing the fault

any ASE shop works
ask em.' to CHeck it out.

bad sign that, get it checked, do not allow it to slip.
or it can get worse fast.

Check the mechanism inside the gear lever thumb button in case it has failed.

Cruise control. Unhook it and see if the problem goes away.

EGR wont cause that problem unless it opens at idle while driving egr wont effect the way it runs

Take the vehicle to Auto Zone or another parts store that will read the engine fault code from the ECM for you. Most will do it for free. Depending on how long it has been since you replaced the plugs and wires on your vehicle you may have a bad spark plug or plug wire that is causing the problem. Easy enough to fix if you don't have to pull the air intake assembly to change the back 3 plugs. If you do have to pull this you should get a chiltons repair manual so you ahve instructions on how to remove and replace the intake assembly.

1. will it stay running if you foot is sligtly on the gas.
if so common problem it the IAC valve located on top of the throttle body. it controls ait into the engine when throttle is closed.
2. do you hear loud fog horn like sound or hissing. this could indicate a vaccum leak.
3. are there any performance problems while driving.

my best guess would be the IAC (idle air control) valve

suprisingly it could be the TCC Solenoid on ur transmission. it could be locked in a gear and when u go to change the gear it stalls out. sooner or later the clutch in the auto transmission will let go and allow you to move. its a long shot. does this happen after a dead cold start or have u been running the car for a while?
