Filter: Under hood, driver side, front side of strut tower, rear of battery, mounted on fender in fuel line
Pump: inside fuel tank but accessible from inside the car--see procedure below from autozone.com.
1993-99 Cabrio, Golf, and Jetta
Remove the negative battery cable.
Raise and safely support the vehicle.
Relieve the fuel system pressure.
Remove the rear seat and the access cover.
Disconnect the wiring and hoses.
Remove the fuel lines from the pump.
On 1993-99 Golf, Jetta and Cabrio vehicles, unscrew the fuel pump retaining ring.
On all other models, remove the mounting bolts and the fuel pump.
Carefully lift out the pump and gauge sending unit assembly.
Hi, remove gas cap and relieve fuel system pressure from fuel rail pressure relieve valve.Then you will want a drain pan of course. Before you can remove the fuel line, you will have to buy the cheap plastic quick-connect fuel line removal tool that fits your car. Or buy a universal pack for like $5. Then you press the plastic tool inside the fitting and pull on the other side and it disconnects instantly. then grab the new filter and the lines will just click right back in
The fuel filter can be located under the carpeted cargo storage floor at the rear of the wagon. Remove the four 10mm bolts, remove the cover. You will then see a removable plate to the right just behind the rear passenger seat. Fuel filter can be seen through hole in hole. Replaced from underneath wagon. Be sure to make sure lines are fully inserted onto filter. Check for leaks. Note arrow on filter for correct fuel flow. Good luck and hope this helps and no smoking please LOL

Not a good sign at all make sure that the pump has a good ground but i will exchange the pump from where i got it, the fuel that runs into the pump should be cooling the motor but in your case the pump is heating the fuel not a very good sign please replace the pump.
