My 1995 ford contour wont start it sound like the battery is dead but its new so are the post rings that go on the post to the battery every time you turn the key it clicks theres a new alternater on the car im thinking its the starter but i dont know some one told me to try an check the the fuel fliter or replace the fuel pump

If the vehicle is equipped with a timing belt, make sure it hasn't jumped throwing the valve timing off.

you need starter shims added till it stops grinding at the auto parts store cheap

Since you say you are not getting fire, have you actually checked for spark at the plugs ?
If so and you have no spark, you would need to check for voltage and a ground signal at the coil next.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
2.0L Engine (see Figures 1 through 6)

Fig. 1: Remove the coolant recovery tank hose from the water outlet

Fig. 2: Remove the upper radiator hose from the water outlet

Fig. 3: Remove the three retaining bolts for the water outlet

Fig. 4: Carefully separate the water outlet from the thermostat housing

Fig. 5: Remove the thermostat from the housing

Fig. 6: Make sure you replace the O-ring when installing a new thermostat

Have your charging system checked.Have them load test thecharging system and make sure the alternator is charging.Good luck.

Timing belt jumped or broken.

The most common failed start is ignition spark, usually forgot to hook it up, this is controlled by the ignition module and the crank sensor, second most common is fuel. Has your mechanic fixed it yet? if not check the three basics- air-fuel-fire, one them is missing.

Check the output of the alternator to insure it charging properly

sounds like your alternator isn't charging the battery.take alternator to auto parts store to have it tested.

If headlight do not come on, leave them on and start check ground and power.
If headlights do come on then locate the starter and fine something to tape on it, not too hard,
but before u can do this have someone set inside the car with the key turn in the start position...
