1987 Dodge B150 "Check EGR" light?

My 1987 Dodge B150 van with 5.2L engine is giving me a "check EGR" light on the dash. All runs well EXCEPT just after startup in cool temps. The engine will falter a bit, RPMS slow but as soon as the engine coolant temp gauge moves, all is well again. Is the EGR valve controlling exhaust by-pass thru the intake manifold on this set up... and therefore if it's not working right giving me this problem?? When the engine is warm, no problems at all, runs fine. What's the best way to "check" the EGR valve?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Bill Alaska replaced 9v battery but cannot find reset switch

Hello, if you have a vacuum pull off choke, you can try replacing your thermal vacuum valve on the intake manifold, it fits with the slow rpm..s at cold start!! Good luck, cheap repair if it works for ya. marty

1991 Dodge B150 Ram Van. 3.9L V6, AT, wo AC. Intermittent charging system for a couple months.

Holy cow! Make sure you stick to the basics here. Battery cable corrosion, Ground straps to the body. Bolts tight on the alternator. I have seen all of those issues and they can all cause that problem. Also, I have seen a voltage regulator (internal one) swing up and down on voltage when certain RPM is met. Please stick to the simple items.

Have your electrical system tested for shorts.

You starter could also be using higher amperage if its older. You would need to remove it and have it checked at a parts store.

You can buy a switch that mounts on the battery and disconnects the battery completely from the vehicle when not in use. This way you can rule out a short AND have a practical way of immobilizing the van when you want to.

I have a EGR code in my truck how do i fix it

In the 87 model the check EGR light was triggered by mileage to get you to have the EGR cleaned and serviced. In 87 they didn't have differential pressure transducers or smart computers to monitor EGR performance. On the right Side of the dash there is a square hole plug about 1 X 1.5 inches square it's behind your key ring if the keys are in the truck looks like it's for a factory option switch that you don't have it matches the one on the left side for the emergency flasher switch. Pull it out and look in the back of the hole at the top there is a black switch I can't remember if it resets the EGR Light or just checks the light Play with it and see of it turns off your EGR light.
