*buy* your gear..
I'd also like to note that they provide free instructions on how to do it yourself, depending on the style gear you need, to do it yourself should you want to save some more money. Not to had of a fix to be honest.
This can definitely be the problem If the gear is broke there is nothing to transfer the power from the motor to the track. These gears brake all the time. You put a person in the seat and then make a plastic gear do all that work and eventually they break. Given the fact your mechanic has already took a look and said that is what the problem is I am inclined to believe him.
To answer your other question the answer is yes he can tell from the pics. There is no set style of gear based on the model of your car but it is definitely one of the three listed as those three are the styles are the only ones they used for all Infiniti vehicles 2003 to current and he will know on sight. Make sure he saves the magnet off the old gear or the signal will not send. The new gears do not come with a magnet so just keep the old one. Send the link to your mechanic and your seat will be working in no time.
Just to clear something up they are actually a tract gear. The site is just called Odometer Gear Inc.
That's great news to hear. I new it would work out. All the things one can do with $1000. Come back anytime.
Please feel free to rate the solution as you feel is deserved.

Hey Tony, this thread is a couple years old but I'm now having the same issue described above with an 06' Infiniti FX35. I described the issue of my seat not moving forwards or backward when I try to adjust (but it will tilt and the lumbar support works) and they told me it sounded like the motor went out. I don't hear anything trying to work when I press the button to move the seat so could it still just be a gear that's broken or the actual motor on the seat is bad? I'm curious to know your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Usually answered in minutes!
my mechanic said it was a broken gear..he has locked my seat in one position...if he looks at the 3 gears from odometer gear should he know the correct one..if this works tony you are a genius and I will let you know...do you think this is the seat problem
Hello Tony
met with my mechanic today. he confirmed that Odometer Infiniti seat gear with collar is the exact duplicate of my broken gear still on the seat track. I just ordered gear from Odometer. As soon as I rreceive my mechanic will install and thanks to you and Odometer I will have my seat back to moving forward and backward again. What a great service. I would recommend FixYa to everyone.
and definitely use again if any more problems. I spent $20 for your answer and will save over $1000 by avoiding dealer's outrageous charges for a complete replacement track + labor charges.
