Loss of power, car was laboring and flashing engine light came on. Later the power came back and engine light is out. I was on the freeway around 60-65 mph, going up a small grade on a clear and warm day if that helps. Also have recently been having problems with starting car after its gotten hot. After it cools for an hour or so it starts up without problem. Don't know if the two could be related.

My son was driving his '04 Volvo on the highway, when all of the sudden the car started slowing down, despite how much he ... Last I heard they were 60.

Sounds like the engine has a cam chain issue.

Where I live there is a Schuck's auto parts...and they have a hand held diagnostic tester that plugs right in to your harness. This will tell you whats is wrong.It only takes about 2 min and they don't charge you.On my car it was the mass air flow censor.If you can't find a Auto parts store that does this...take it to a shop soon. the power loss light has nothing to do with the alternator, the power loss light is part of the on-board computer system it is the equivalent of the check engine light on newer cars it is on because one of the sensors is not working on the car.

this is how to retrieve the code that is turning on the light.

turn the key on ( do not crank the engine ) turn the key off, turn the key on, turn the key off, turn the key on. ( never crank the engine ) this all has to be done in les then 10 seconds so to re-cap key on, off,on,off, on.

the power loss light will start flashing. all codes are 2 digit, for example a code will look like this.

flash,flash, pause (about 1 second), flash, flash,flash this code would be a 23 , the first two flashes would be a 2 the pause is the separator the next 3 flashes are a 3 so the code is 23, i hope you under stand.

A flashing light is BAD. Its damaging the cat converter. I would check or replace the spark plug wires ( if all OK, then) replace the coil pack. I would not replace anything unless they test bad. but these car are known for bad coil packs.

there is a engine malfunction, have vehicle scanned to access problem codes.

Take it and have the codes extracted most parts places will do it for free .I know autozone will.

I'm having same problem on my 2000 model rodeo 4wd 3.2L V6. Other day check engine light came on. I checked engine bay nothing abnormal, or power loss. Next day light was gone. 2 days later driving, a sudden loss of power and light came up. After idling for a couple of minutes, drove off with light still on but all power back. 1 hour later of faultless driving loss of power for a minute or so. Engine temp normal. Had break for 1/2 hour and set off for last hour of journey without fault except check engine light still on. Following dayon startup light went out???
