All motors need timing belts, not all need to be replaced, if your timing of off and you've gone the normal routes to correct timing issues, its very possible that your timing "skipped" this is a medium project for a skilled mechanic since with the newer cars you have to remove and remember all the extras you have to take off, and of course the alignment of the timing please take a moment to rate my reply, and if you need more info, feel free to contact me

Your engine family (3.1 liter / 3.4 liter V6) uses a timing chain, and according to GM, *should* last the life of the engine.

2002 chevy malibu engine 3.4 interference motor or not?

The 2002 Chevrolet Malibu has the 3.1mfi engine which is not an interference engine. It has a timing chain and not a belt. It is an o.v.h. system with two valves per cylinder. I have replaced timing chains and have had the heads checked, with no damage to the valves.

Are there any engine components that need to be removed to replace the 3 rear sparkplugs?

i did replace my plugs, there is a plastic clip on the alternator that holds the wiring on you can pop off to get out of the way to get to the plugs. Use gloves and if you have a spark plug boot puller tool it helps, since they get stuck and are hard to get off, and you can pull the wire out of the boot and will have to replace the whole wire. make sure the right wire goes back on the right plug.

1999 chevy malibu

That engine does not have a timing belt, it has a timing chain and therefore much easier to work with as it can only go on a certain way, the primary focus being getting the dots on the timing chain sprockets lined up properly.

I believe, with the engine at Top Dead Center on cylinder #1, the dots will be facing each other. That is to say, the do on the cam sprocket will be facing the dot on the crank sprocket.
