My 2000 audi a4 is making a erratic humming noise when in park and drive. It started making this noise after I had driven my car in low gear on a windy mountain road. When the car is in park i press the gas and as the car is winding up it makes the erratic noise, when I let go of the gas and it comes back down to idle it sound like it wants to back fire. I have checked all the coil packs and they are working fine. Is this a transmission problem?

The humming is the central lock vacuum pump running..You either have a leak in one of the lines, or one of the hoses has popped off

It's the wheel bearing. Guaranteed. Just replaced mine. Go to Audiworld tech articles for step by step instructions on how to test the wheel bearings. They must have been put in wrong last time or they just went out again.

Silly question: Have you checked the transmission fluid level, and is it to manufacturer's spec?

It could be a unevenly worn tire or a bad wheel bearing.

I have the same problem with my 2005 Audi A4 3.0. As soon as the car is started the noise starts - it's a high pitched sound.
The same thing happened with my 2005 audi A4 1.8l. I have been told it is the fuel pump, but when mine was replaced, it continued to make that noise. Still have no idea what is wrong.
