2002 Sunfire with 2.2 ECOTEC Car acted like it ran out of gas. Would crank, run roughly a few seconds, then again acted like it ran out of gas. The next day and the next 3 days it has performed normally. I now have a trust problem when driving it.

Have the fuel pressure and volume tested with a gage.this sounds and acts like a fuel pump problem.check the fuel filter as well and replace anyways.when it won`t start but cranks can you hear the fuel pump running.listen at the fuel filler neck with the gas cap off.if you can`t listen under the car at the fuel tank you should hear it running/if not hit the gas tank and if the car starts then the pump needs replacing.you should check to make sure you are getting spark at the spark plugs to eliminate an ignition problem but i think its fuel.

2000 Pontiac Sunfire. What would cause this and had anyone else had this happen or something similar?

The problem is the pipe that has split or separated under the fuel filler. It is supposed to be an airtight seal for the fuel and the fumes from the fuel. All called the Evaporative (gas vapour) Emission (gas NOT getting into the atmosphere) System.

Nothing to do with the other items you mentioned and all caused by the above.

I replaced the timing chain in a 2005 potiac sunfire with a 2.2 and now it run rough but runs fin going down the road but idling it run rough and sometimes will die

if the car ran fine befor you changed the timing chain you may have the cam timing off by one tooth retarted. Being the PCM controls the timing advance . The engine smooths out at higher speeds .Start back tracking and looking at the simple stuff . but you may have to pull the timing housing again to check the timing marks on the cam and the crank

Trying to locate the fuel filter and pump...

The fuel filter is in the hood (metalic black) and the fuel pump is in the fuel tank (either through the back seat or bringing the tank down.

Cheers
