Drain the Transmission Fluid and Replace the Filter
Raise the car with ramps or a floor jack and support it with jack stands. Find the lower cover of the torque converter housing. Turn the torque converter until you find the drain plug. Place a drain pan beneath the drain hole, remove the plug and drain the fluid.
Remove the cooler lines at the transmission and flush them with compressed, low pressure air. Be careful during this step; fluid may shoot from the other cooler line.
Place a large drain pan beneath the transmission. Loosen the retaining bolts on the oil pan with a socket wrench until they are within a few turns of removal. If the seal doesn't break on its own, gently tap it with a rubber hammer. Fluid will drain from the edges of the pan.
Remove the pan retaining bolts when the fluid stops draining. There is still transmission fluid in the pan. Hold the pan carefully and drain as much as you can into the drain pan.
Scape the old gasket material from the mating surfaces on the oil pan and the transmission. Discard the old gasket. Clean the magnet in the pan. Clean the pan and the mating surfaces with a solvent and a clean, lint-free cloth. Replace the magnet and allow the pan to air dry.
Employ a socket wrench to remove the bolt that holds the filter onto the transmission. Some models may have two bolts. Pull the filter and any old seals or gaskets from the transmission. Install a new filter assembly, including any required seals or gaskets.
Put a new gasket on the oil pan and reinstall it on the transmission. Tighten the retaining bolts to 79- to 119-inch pounds with a torque wrench. Replace the cooler lines on the transmission and the drain plug on the torque converter.

Basicly just remove the bolts in the transmission oil pan, make sure you have a drain pan under it and leave a couple bolts in, loosen the remining bolts and let the oil drain then loosen and remove them slowly as oil will be draining out while you are doing it.

Change the filter and after cleaning the pan install a new gasket and put it back on. Do not tighten the bolts too tight because it will distort the gasket and it will leak.

Pour about 5 quarts of transmission fluid in the trannsmission and start it up, look for leaks, and finish filling it to the cold line on the dip stick. If there are no leaks run until its warmed up and make sure the fluid level is at the full hot line on the stick.

There is really no way to drain the converter.

15 quarts is total capacity of transmission, toprque converter, lines and the cooling reservoir. What you would have to add if a new transmission was being installed.
8 quarts is the capacity if you were to drain the transmission on the car, like if you were doing a flush and refill, you take the lower transm. pan off and let all fluid drain, you will only get about 8 quarts.

I've done this alone. It's easier with a second person, and sometimes helps prevent spills. Things you need to get started: The E4OD and 4R100 transmission system holds almost 18 quarts of ATF, and you must waste a couple of quarts to be sure you get it all purged and replaced, so buy 20 quarts of MERCON ATF [For the 4R100, use MERCON V]. You may use either conventional or synthetic, as long as it meets the above requirements.The 4R70W transmission system holds about 14 quarts of ATF. The 4R70W uses MERCON V, and the MERCON V can be used on older 4R70W transmissions that were factory filled with MERCON. I replace the transmission filter every other fluid change. Note that Ford does not recommend ever changing the filter. I've opened filters with over 300,000 miles that were not even close to being clogged. Don't buy a new pan gasket. The original is reusable. A 10 foot length of clear tubing and one hose clamp, sized to fit over your cooler hose. There have been different size cooler lines over the years, so check before buying! If you don't already have a special funnel that fits into the transmission dipstick tube, then you will need one of those, too.If you are changing the filter, drain the pan if your pan has a drain plug. If you are not changing the filter, jump to step 4. If you don't have a drain plug, go to step 4 to pump out the pan, preventing an ATF shower! Return here after step 4 and one pass through step 5a. Remove the pan and clean the pan and gasket, including the magnet on the bottom of the pan. Fuzz on the magnet is normal, that's why it is there!Change the filter. It just pulls out, there are no bolts that hold it. It is held in place by the pan. Make sure that the O-ring is removed, too. Sometimes it does not come out with the filter.Replace the pan, using the reusable gasket. At this point you can drain the torque converter. Some people think it is necessary, but I don't. Running the engine in the next steps will pump the fluid out of the torque converter. If your transmission was built after August 2001, you don't have a drain plug in the torque converter.To drain the torque converter remove the shield (or the rubber plug in some models) and turn the flywheel until you see the drain plug. If you also drain the torque converter, then the old ATF will not come out the return line until after the torque converter has filled.If you drained the pan, pour new ATF into the filler [dipstick] tube until you have added about as much as you earlier drained from the pan. At this point overfilling by no more than one quart won't hurt anything.Disconnect the transmission-fluid return line at the transmission - from where the ATF returns to the transmission from the cooler. This is the line towards the rear of the transmission. Clamp the clear tubing over the line that you removed from the transmission. This is where the fluid comes out.This is where the second person comes in handy. One person starts the engine, while the other holds the line over the drain bucket. A clothes pin can replace the person holding the line in the bucket. Run the engine until you see some air in the clear tubing. As soon as you see air shut off the engine. Refill through the dipstick tube with the same amount as you just pumped out.NOTE: If you drained the pan and the torque converter, fluid will not run out until you fill the pan a second time. Run the engine for 30 seconds, then stop and add six more quarts.Repeat step 5 until you have added 19 quarts with of new ATF to the system with an E4OD or 4R100. Repeat until you have added 13 quarts with the 4R70W.At least one time while the engine is running move the shifter through each position from P to 1, pausing about 5 seconds at each position. This will change some fluid that would otherwise be trapped in the valve body, accumulators, and clutches.Remove the clear line and reconnect the cooler line to the transmission.Check the fluid level and use the last quart to top off.Properly dispose of the used transmission fluid. Congratulate yourself! And your engine starter/killer person.

usually there is not a drain plug. If you are changing fluid, consider a lube shop with a T-Tech style flush machine. This machine pushes in new fluid while removing old fluid. MUCH more complete as it gets torque converter, cooling lines, passageways, and trans cooler. you simply cannot drain all of those areas without this methodology. Also change the trans filter, it is inside the pan.

It has a capacity of 5 quarts of SAE 5W30 oil with filter change. The cooling system capacity is 2 3/4 gallon of a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. The 40T40E transmission/torque converter holds a total capacity of 12.9 quarts or 6.9 quarts to just drain the pan and replace the fluid.

My 1997 Caravan manual states that the trans fluid capacity is 8.5 quarts. However, in the transmission oil change section, it says to drop the pan, drain the oil, replace the filter and add 4 quarts of new fluid. This tells me that the torque converter is not draining so you are in fact, only changing "half" of the transmission fluid.

The transmission is not sealed in the v8 I looked up. It's bolted together. Fluid Pan Removal & Installation To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section
2. Raise and support the vehicle
3. Place a drain pan under the transmission fluid pan
4. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Drain plug and drain the fluid
   • Shifter cable bracket NOTE: The transmission fluid pan gasket is reusable, clean and inspect for damage; if not damaged, the gasket should be reused.
     
   • Fluid pan and gasket
   • Transmission fluid filter
   • Clean and inspect the transmission fluid pan and magnet
   • Converter housing access plug
   • Converter drain plug

To Install:
NOTE: A new converter drain plug must be used to prevent leakage.

1. Install or connect the following:
   • Install the converter drain plug. Torque to 89 in-lbs (10 Nm)
   • Install the converter housing access plug
2. Lubricate the seals and install the transmission fluid filter. Torque the bolts to 89 in-lbs (10 Nm)
3. Install the oil pan magnet in the transmission fluid pan NOTE: The transmission fluid pan gasket is reusable, clean and inspect for damage; if not damaged, the gasket should be reused.
   
4. Install the transmission fluid pan and gasket and loosely install the screws.
5. Using a crisscross sequence, torque the screws to 8 ft-lbs (11 Nm)
6. Install the shifter cable bracket. Torque bolts to 18 ft-lbs (25 Nm)
7. Install the drain plug. Torque to 19 ft-lbs (26 Nm) NOTE: It will be necessary to hold the drain plug (larger plug) with a wrench when removing the fluid level indicator plug.
   NOTE: Use 3/16 inch Allen key to remove the fluid level indicator plug. Remove the fluid level indicator plug.
   
8. Verify the transmission fluid level
