The 1986 Ranger V-6 was a 2.8L 170.4 cu or 2792 cc.
The carb for this engine was a 2 BBL Model 2150, E37E-AEA (Will not cross except for re-build kits!)
The Holley remanufactured PN is 645544

Ford Ranger Carburetor Problem

Usually there is an electric heater on the side of the carb that opens the choke. You may want to check the heater to see if it has voltage and if it is working.
The linkage for the choke can get sticky or dirty and not work. Basic gravity and a spring opens the choke so the linkage must move freely.

1984 Ford Ranger- will not idle at all, will start and run with your foot on the pedal at high RPM's- I installed new carb so that's not it was acting the same before- I bought it for a huntin

Check for a vacuum leak somewhere. It could b the pcv valve on the valve cover or the hose going to the brake booster. Take the hose off the brake booster and plug it. then start the engine. It might also b the base gasket under the carb.

Changing electric system on 2.8 engine

You will need the Duraspark ll ignition system from a late 70's Ford 2.8. I used the 78 Mustang ll to order the parts when I did my 84 Bronco ll 2.8.
You will need the distributor, rotor, distributor cap and adapter, and the ignition module. You can use the TFI coil that was on the 2.8. you will also have to replace the feedback carb with a non feedback one. A Motorcraft 2150 will work.
For more help TheRangerStation.com is a site dedicated to Ranger based vehicles(Ranger, Bronco ll and Explorer). They have a very extensive Tech Library. Membership to the site is free and the forums and Tech Library can be viewed without becoming a member.
Look in the Tech Library under "Ignition/2.8 duraspark conversion.
