Try scanning the live data for the coolant temperature sensor after the engine is warm to see if it matches actual temp.

Hey, very good possibility that the engine position sensor is failing. Its a bit of a pain to change if it has the same design as the 3800s in the vans. The harmonic balancer will have to come off the front of the engine and you will need to make sure the sensor is adjusted to the proper position when ypu put it back together. Be gentle with the sensor. They are very easy to break. If you have done something like this before seek help. Travis, pro mechanic.

1998 3800 v6 firebird... wont run right after starting

Possibly a weak fuel pump, idle air control valve, vacuum leaks, or loose or damaged wiring in the ignition system. Check for vacuum leaks first. That's the only one that won't cost anything. Make sure all intake bolts are tight, and all hoses are connected properly and in good condition.

1999 fire bird wont start

Sounds like a fuel problem, when was the last time the fuel filter was chg.? If that is not an issue, than a fuel pressure test is in order, It should have around 48 to 50 p.s.i.
