Parking brake on my 2004 2.5SE Auto does not release properly so the rear N/S disc is binding.
Can it be freed up easily or does it require a 2nd mortgage?
Same "parking break failure" on my 03 S-Type. Dealer says reaquires whole new replacement, including motor to release it - $1400 job. I have had a similiar problem in that the Parkbrake on my 04 SE S type has locked on. I have tried a system reboot in case the problem was electrical and this has permitted the removal of the parkbrake on a case by case instance. Unfortunately this means that the battery has to be disconnected for 10-15 minutes before each use of the car and during that time, the boot lid must remain open else it cannot be reopened without power. Much like everyone else.... Jaguar tried to BS me and say that it is the PB motor which needs replacing when the fault is clearly electrical. It is possible that the handbake cable is wrapped around the wrong side of the sway bar link rod N/S rear, while looking at it on ground behind car cable should sit on top not behind link rod

The ABS light illuminates when there is an "out of specification" condition. From your description, it sounds like your parking brake cable may require tightening, or there may be an issue where the rear brakes are not properly releasing when the parking brake is released. With car that is nearly 20 years old, it is not inconceivable that the rear brakes and parking brake assembly may require regular service.
A good first step would be to have error codes read out by a local mechanic or auto parts store. This may give you a better indication of the specific problem. In any case, ANY brake warning should be taken VERY SERIOUSLY and corrected IMMEDIATELY, as you may have a potentially dangerous potential of catastrophic brake failure. PLEASE GET THE ISSUE FIXED RIGHT AWAY!
you should check the park brake cable please note that the rav4 uses a disc brake for driving but has internal brake shoes for parking/emergency braking they are located insider the disc
If releasing the parking brake does not get the rear wheels to release, then you either have a parking brake cable that is badly corroded and sticking, or you have internal problems in the rear brakes like broken springs, etc that are jamming the brakes. You will have to inspect your rear brakes and paking brake cables to find out which it is.
You should be able to pull on the parking brake cable and get movement easily. It depends on if your Caravan is equipped with front disc and rear drum brakes or if it is equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes. If it has 4-wheel disc, then you could also have a bad rear caliper.
NOTE: When removing the rear brake disc (2C026) in this procedure it is not necessary to disconnect the hydraulic lines. Remove the rear disc brake caliper (2552).

NOTE: If the rear brake disc binds on the rear parking brake shoe and linings, remove the adjustment hole access plug and contract(push back to allow clearance) the parking brake shoe and lining.
tim, I'm not sure if you have rear disc or drum brakes, but this is usually a caliper or brake cylinder (at the wheel) problem. If you have drum brakes, check for any problems like broken springs on the shoes, which would result in parts floating around, and brakes not releasing properly. The same for disc brakes, make sure nothing has become loose (mounting pins for caliper). If you find it is a brake cyl/caliper problem, you will need to rebuild or replace it. Make sure you bleed the brakes for the entire system (you want to flush out the system to prevent further problems), as old brake fluid can become contaminated (brake fluid absorbs water, which corrodes calipers and brake cylinders, leading to failure of those components). Last, make sure it isn't a parking brake that is not releasing. Parking brake cables corrode from exposure to the elements and can bind up, causing the brakes to drag. Use something like WD-40 on the cables to keep them operating correctly.
since the new pads are alot thicker than the old ones,the brake needs to be set properly.

the retainer for the park brake cable may be not in the right spot.there is two places it can fit.
Although you've released the parking brake, inside the car, are you sure the cable moved and disengaged the rear brakes ? A physical removal of the rear wheels will be required and parking brake cable and linkage operation inspected. If the cable appears to be a BINDING , a heavy dose of WD-40 will cure it. The automatic (vacuum) release-type is standard equipment on all vehicles.
The automatic vacuum-type parking brake system contains the following features:
A parking brake release control motor (2A843) with mounting bracket bolted to the parking brake control .
The vacuum-actuated diaphragm within the parking brake release control motor which is connected by a rod to the upper end of the parking brake release vacuum hose (2B653) .
The parking brake release vacuum hose which connects the parking brake release control motor to the engine manifold through a vacuum release switch at the steering column tube (3514) .
The parking brake release control motor which is actuated to release the parking brake whenever the engine is running and the transmission is in a forward-driving gear.
The automatic parking brake control which has a manual release feature that releases the foot parking brake control by applying force to the parking brake control pedal in the "apply" direction to the point of initial application.
The parking brake control will return to the full-release position after removing the force.
Disconnect negative lead to battery, wait 15 mins, then reconnect.
press and hold foot brake on, then operate handbrake switch to put handbrake on. then release foot brake and see if handbrake releases on moving away or manually on the switch.
Before diconecting battery make sure you have the radio code.
