1995 Audi A6 2.8 automatic won't go past second gear. Took it to a garage and they said it was multi-functional switch (cost $485). Never heard of a mutli-functional, but was told it like neutral safety switch. They said if the switch goes bad it will never shift higher than second gear. Just wonder if I am being had or this is the real deal. Has anyone else ever ran into this with 95 Audi A6 2.8.
One reason for stuck in 2nd gear its anti theft if u have remvd fuses and replaced it takes it as tampering and the computer has to be reset which costs at audi agents but i got from autoelectrician that if u disconnect battery for ten minutes then re connect it re sets the onboard computer i had same problem and ive done it twice with mine with success could be same with yours try it its so inexpensive
For Audi A6 2.8 automatic I want to ask the owner of this car if the mechanic repair the automatic gear or no after I will give the solution
for Audi A6 2.8 you must to check the following
1- Drain the automatic oil and see any change in the color of oil
2- change the filter inside the automatic gear
3- put new filter and new oil with the same grade
Note= when you drain the oil let me know if you see any traces
this is the best way for your automatic gear

I have the same problem stuck in 2nd gear.I disconnected the battery for more than ten min but still nothing still the same.
Anybody has any clue.
Give it some more time. My fuel guage wasn't working... was on a trip. Pulled over at a wayside, changed the fuse, that's all it was. flipped a couple other fuses around... Got back on the road... car wouldn't get past first gear... I Freaked out !!!
Anyway, more to the story, SLOWLY Drove home with the flashers on, Fortunatly was only 10 miles from home. Got on the net saw your post, give it 15 minutes. That was it. pulled out of the drive and it shifted fine.

No it wasn't fixed cause wasn't sure about the solution given. It just sounded to out there.
I had a similar problem but noted the tranny would shift through on level terrain. Once I'd go up a hill, the gear stuck in second. Only way to resolve en route was to shut car off and restart. Got under the car and realized my fluid level was less than half full (note: '95 A6 Q 12 valve has not dipstick.) Dropped pan, rinsed and cleaned magnet on bottom (no filter exposed). Reattached pan with new gasket (no I do not have a torque wrench) and pumped Dextron III fluid into the side plug until fluid began draining out. Start car with e-brake on and while idling, shift through all gears for a couple minutes. Go back under car and open plug and remeasure, most likely have to pump a little more back in until you get full. Ran like a charm since (2 years now).
I have a 1995 AUDI 90 The car shifts from first to second properly, but has a difficult time shifting to third gear. Very similar to your problem.
I haven't gotten it fixed. This sounds like a plausible solution. Let me know.
