Here is a few diagrams of the timing marks. Be sure that you check the marks after the tensioner has been installed as well because installing the tensioner tends to slightly re-adjust the positions of the cams as it takes up slack on one side.

Be carful when turning the engine (by hand) because these engines are an interferance engine and the valves can contact the pistons. After everything is installed and tight, rotate the engine by hand twice and then recheck that the marks are good to go.

If you haven't replaced the water pump, I highly recommend you do it now.

Remove Belt.Turn crankshaft pulley mark to line up with mark on housing TDC. Turn camshaft gear mark to line up with mark on head or block housing. More than one mark on cam gear ? If so turn camshaft till number four cylinder inlet and exhaust valves are just rocking this is the mark to use. ( same can be used on a six cylinder engine rocking number six valves ) fit new parts, tension belt, (TIP) now turn engine twice by hand , recheck that timing marks line up . saves a lot of time if you find they don't later.

The pistons are hitting the valves due to wrong alignment of timing gears and the timing belt. Align the timing gears and timing belt marks according to the following diagrams.

How can i set the timming on a 2000 honda civic without pulling the harmonic balancser,i had to replace the head

I would remove the crank pulley . this timing set up must be correct. you are trying to take a short cut but i would not advise that.
Remove the crank pulley and also replace the timing belt and water pump while you are there. if timing belt is installed wrong piston to valve damage will occur and you will be removing head again to have valves replaced. here is a diagram of the timing marks, if you wish to do this with out removing the crank pulley (balancer) then good luck and be careful, i am not sure what size engine you have but this is for a 2000 honda civic, 4 cylinder, they are the same,

I think you are putting head back together here are a few diagrams to help you with the timing belt. good day.7_27_2012_5_30_55_pm.gif7_27_2012_5_31_10_pm.gif7_27_2012_5_31_24_pm.gif

How to replace timing belt 1995 vw golf

  1. remove air intake pipe, and box (upper and lower section)
  2. take off timing belt cover
  3. take off serpintine belt, and v belt
  4. rotate engine to TDC marks line up on crank and cam. camshaft says O^T on it and on the cover behind gear, crank has a notch in the pulley and a arrow on the cover to line up
  5. remove crank pulley 6mm allens not the 19mm 12 bolt
  6. make sure timing belt is still at TDC remove lower timing belt cover there is 3 bolts and a nut holding it on the nut is by the water pump and the bolts are on on top and 2 behind the crank pulley
  7. remove cover
  8. mark intermediate shaft shaft right above the crank pulley
  9. remove belt
  10. install reverse of removal make sure to line up all 3 pulleys cam crank and intermediate shaft or it wont run and depending on how bad it is out of time if you do it wrong you could bend valves
Assuming this is a 2.0 8v your question is pretty vague

Hi, I need to replace the timing belt on my

The crankshaft pulley has a hole in it, just above the key. It should be straight up and lined up with the mark on the engine.
The cam pulley also has a hole, and it should be lined up with the little v in your camshaft cover. Put the belt on, line it up, and turn the engine over with a wrench or socket, 2 complete revolutions. Everything should be exactly the same place as when you lined it up. If not, you are out one cog, and will have to do it again.
Make sure the cam is on compression stroke when you line it up. Both valves on #1 cylinder should be fully up... in the closed position.

How to replace a timing belt

First take a digital picture of the belt while it is still installed, use that as a guide to install the new one, there are 2 marks that must be lined up, the crank pulley needs to be at #1 cylinder Top Dead Center (TDC) and the cam pulley arrow aligned with mark on head, make sure you check all the pulleys the belt runs on for loose bearings or roughness when the are spun, replace them as needed, now is a good time to do the water pump also. When you think every thing is right, turn the engine one revolution (by hand) and check the alignment marks again, if you get it wrong you can damage the valves, which is not good to say the least.

Intake and exhaust cam pullyes moved when timing belt was taken off, was trying to replace timing belt and I did mark pulleys myself before taking belt off. Now the pulleys will not move, theres...

The pulleys should move, take a wrench and try turning them. Most likely they are on the compression stroke and so you are just having a hard time turning them. As long as everything is off by the same number of teeth, you can put the belt back on and the tensioner on without the marks being lined up. Make sure once the tension is replaced that all of them are perfect. It took me 4 tries last time I did it on an engine, perfection is key. Let me know if you need anything else. good luck
