Volvo V70 (53 reg) rear wiper has stopped working. Can hear motor trying to turn it but wiper blade doesn't move? Is this something simple I can fix myself?

Hi there I have the same problem on my V70, I stripped the whole motor assembly down and found that there was aplastic cog on which the teeth had worn, sounds like you have the same problem.

You cannot order this cog on its own, so have to order the complete motor, this could cost you £ 180 but isnt difficult to fit.

I too have this problem. Where the motor's brass worm screw turns on the large round white plastic gear, about an inch of the white gear has a groove in the centre worn by the worm screw. I expect a piece of crud got between the two to cause this. The motor itself (Volvo 8667188) has markings on it Made in Czech Republic, PAL, 443122291017, 0403-STL1A1165. My Internet search of these didn't come up with anything. I may try my son's suggestion of filling the groove with epoxy and filing to shape the gear teeth - nothing to lose if it doesn't work and if it does and lasts a few years, may be able to find a replacement cheaper by that time.

No you would have to pull the motor to make sure its working but it sounds like what you may be hearing is like a humming sound where its trying to work but not.

REAR WIPER ON 08 FORD FIESTA STICKING CAN HEAR MOTOR WORKING

If you can hear the rear wiper motor working but the wiper is sticking and not moving properly, there are several potential reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:
  1. Check for Obstructions: Inspect the area around the rear wiper blade for any obstructions or debris that might be preventing smooth movement. Clear away any leaves, twigs, or other materials that could be hindering the wiper's motion.
  2. Wiper Arm and Blade Inspection: Examine the rear wiper arm and blade for any damage or signs of wear. A damaged wiper arm or blade might be causing the sticking issue. If there are visible issues, consider replacing the wiper blade assembly.
  3. Lubricate the Wiper Mechanism: Apply a silicone-based lubricant to the wiper pivot points and joints. This can help reduce friction and facilitate smoother movement. Be cautious not to use excessive lubricant, as it may attract more dirt and debris.
  4. Check Wiper Motor Linkage: The wiper motor is connected to the wiper arm by a linkage. Check the linkage for any loose or damaged connections. If the linkage is damaged, it may need to be repaired or replaced.
  5. Inspect Wiper Motor Operation: With the rear wiper turned on, observe the movement of the wiper motor linkage. If the motor is working but the linkage isn't moving correctly, there may be an issue with the linkage assembly.
  6. Wiper Motor Replacement: If all else fails and the problem persists, the wiper motor itself may be faulty. In such cases, replacing the wiper motor may be necessary.
  7. Professional Inspection: If you are unable to identify and resolve the issue on your own, or if the problem is related to internal components, it may be best to seek professional assistance. A mechanic or automotive technician can perform a more detailed inspection and provide a more accurate diagnosis.
Remember to exercise caution when working around moving parts and electrical components. If you're unsure or uncomfortable performing these steps, it's advisable to consult with a professional mechanic or take your vehicle to an authorized service center for further assistance.

Wiper motor

Possible wiper linkage has broken/seperated from wiper motor. The wiper cowling covering the linkage assembly will need to be removed to inspect/repair

Rear wiper blade disconnected...how do we fix?

Have to remove the wiper arm & see if the splines are
damaged & if the motor works as it should
There are no easy vehicle fixes
You have to understand how something works & then
diagnose why it doesn't & make the repair
If you get lucky she only ruined the wiper arm &
not the motor or it's drive spline.

Rear wiper stopped but can hear motor working, also hear motor when ignition is turned on

the inside of the wiper could be stripped out and have no tension to move the wiper try pulling it off and changing it if not need to see how to take it of and maybe the motor could have stripped the gears inside itself.

1991 honda accord EX - windshield wipers stopped working during my morning commute. I can hear the motor trying to work when I turn them on, but they won't move. I can see one fuse box under the hood of...

Here is a diagram of the fuse box in the interior. This is where the wiper relay is located, #6. Although if you hear sounds from the motor something might be restricting your blades and or the motor is shot and needs to be replaced.

Rear wiper doesn't press hard enough

I had a similar problem on my Jeep. I tried replacing the blades and it didn't fix anything....just wasted some money. I used WD-40 and still nothing. After 3 winters I decided to try something simple. I put pressure on the base to brace it and tried bending the distal end towards the vehicle. I didn't see it move at all. But it was worth a shot. I turned it on and it contacted perfectly; it operated the way it was when I first got the truck. Good look and I hope this works for you nor is it too late since you posted 2 months ago.

Windshield wipers

don't have to remove the dash- remove the plastic black cowl just under the wipers. The "pop" you heard is probably the clasp coming off the ball nut connected to the wiper motor. check the mounting plate for damage (usually they're good or need a little bending-needle nose pliers work best). Screw the two nuts back down after you reposition the unit. Turn on wipers to test connection, but make sure wipers are clear before testing. Replace cowl and you're back in business.
