My engine light, VSC and Trac off lights are on. I have almost 100,000 miles on my car and no warranty at this point. The car shakes whenever I hit certain speeds. A friend of mine hooked the computer up to my car and it said coil 1 and 2 bad. What does this mean and how do I fix this without spending a fortune at the dealership. I have a 2007 RX 350

That code relates to a crankshaft position sensor signal. It you have a check engine light come it disables the VSC and Trac system. Until you get that sensor fixed the VSC and the TRAC system will be inop. So whenever you have a check engine light come on that is what you will see. Even though you cancel the check engine light the fault still exists and the VSC/ TRAC light will come back on. That is a sure way to tell that something is wrong.

The part is about$ 405 and is under the drivers seat. The other problems is the Catalyst System (engine light) about $1000 for parts.I have about 147,000 miles on my '04 and the problems started about 130,000.

You have to know what code is stored to fix the problem. Toyota's will generally display a Check Engine light, VSC and TRAC light all at the same time, even if it's a simple problem with an oxygen sensor (for example). You can disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes, even though you should a scan tool should be used, to clear out the code.

This could be two seperate problems but the trac and vsc lights can come on when the check engine light does for a number of codes. Have the check ngine light scanned to diagnose the problem. When the problem that caused the engine light to come on is resolved and the code cleared the tra and vsc lights should turn off as well. Rarely they will stay on in which case your toyota dealer may have to do a "zero point calibration".

I have just had the same problem this morning for the first time and I suspect it is just bad gas. We have had problems with the check engine light in our camaro whenever we bought hi test at the Mobile gas station closest to our home. I would not be surprised if this same gas station is now having water problems with their regular gas which is what we put in our 4runner. Try STP gas treatment first, which is what I am going to do now. When I used this approach with my camaro, the light went out within a few days. Technically, a sensor might have been damaged, but my thinking is that if that sensor is dead, then my fuel/air mixture will get bad enough to notice pretty quick. The TRAC off and VSC off are just extra lights that go on, whenever the check engine light comes on. I'll let you know how it goes.
