The 4.0 V6 can have injector problems and not be running on all cyclinders. You can pull one plug wire or injector connector one at a time witht hte engine running and see which cyclinders aren't running. The 4 cyclinder has two coils and one of them can stop working and it'll still run but lose alot of power pulling one plug wire off the coil pack and seeing the spark with it running they shoul all spark so if you find one the does'nt even though other wires are firing in the coil pack you have to repalace the whole thing to get it to work right. It this information does'nt help you or you check and find more troble add a comment and i'll help you somemore. I really need to know what engine you have and what country your in as these cars are built a litttle differently depending on the country they were built for.

When i am idling in drive the car starts to stutter and feels like it is going to stall. when driving everything seems ok just when it idles i feel it. any ideas on what this could be and if it's

Usually your pcm, (onboard computer) will pick up anything out of the ordinary and set a check engine light. this will point you in a direction if the code pertains to the idle issue. If no check engine light, then being a ford you may have carbon build up behind your throttlr body butterfly valve/flap. this will cause a rough idle, as well as issues with your egr valve and your idle air control valve. Its really kinda difficult to diagnose over the phone so to speak, especially if you are dealing with a problem that your pcm will not pick up.

Car won't idle sometimes and dies when i come to a stop. no check engine or service engine lights come on either. doesn't do it all the time though.

The idle is controlled by the idle air control valve, an electronic valve fitted on the inlet side of the engine, they get sticky and cause the car to stall. Sometimes they can be leaned and lubricated but in most cases a replacement is required.
To prove it is this valve, with the engine idling start turning on as much as possible, lights, stereo, heater, aircon on full blast etc.. the car should pick up on revs as these things are activated but your car will probably stall due to the valve sticking.

When i start my 1997 Geo Metro, it often sputters

Try this
Here are the most common causes of surges, stalls at stops, low erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
