I have a 2000 dodge caravan. When the engine is running with van in park engine runs fine. When put into a drive gear the engine runs really rough and even stalls. The transmission fluid is ok. When the engine stalled the oil lamp came on. Oil checked fine no fragments in oil

Sounds like there is a problem with the Torque converter in the transmission or Transmission itself. When you put it in gear it should initially go into neutral but occasionally the transmission will stick part way in gear and partially in neutral putting a load on the motor. It is not enough of a load to get the vehicle moving but it is enough to stall the motor. This could be a simple clutch adjustment in the Automatic clutch to a PCV valve issue to a need to rebuild the whole transmission because of a problem with the control body or transmission pump itself. Sorry for the bad news.

Not real sure but that just sounds expensive. Thanks for the advice!

Unfortunately, if you have to rebuild that transmission your most likely looking at about $1600+ if it's something like the PCV your looking at about $50 or $100. They'll push for the full rebuild though. Make sure you tell them you want the old parts that are replaced back. That will stop them from claiming they replaced everything and charging you for all of them when all they did was reseal it. I've seen all kinds in the transmission business and had one try that on me once.

My 1998 Dodge caravan (3.0 v6 with 3 speed trans) was running fine until one morning I start the van and put it in reverse...nothing, put in drive, 2 and 1 and nothing. It can be pushed in every gear...

With the van in park or neutral with e-brake on, and engine running, pull the transmission fluid dipstick, notice there's no fluid on the dipstick. Put a quart of transmission fluid in the dipstick tube, with e-brake still on, put the van in gear. R or D, and see does the van try to move against the brake. If it tries to move, engine speed drops, put it back in neutral or park and check the fluid level again. If it's still low, put in a little more till it's to the full mark.. Done. Check under the van and find the area where fluid is dripping out and fix it. If it's the pan gasket, replace it. Replace the filter while the pan is down.

Dodge caravan dies when in gear

Vacuum leaks. ( hissing noise around the engine). Tune up (plugs and wires). clean the throttle body(inside of it). All these can cause rough idle. The dieing can be from transmission problems. Can you rev the van up and keep it running while in gear? Or does it die then too? You can replace the solenoid pack on the outside of the transmission for around $250, if you do it yourself. If you do this, DO NOT get any dirt in the holes of the transmission where the solenoid pack sets. Clean it well before you remove the old pack.

Hi everyone. I have a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT, and we recently had the torque converter replaced because it started to run really rough in drive and most of the time it would stall as soon as it was...

have the fault codes read first as the current problem as with the first has nothing to do with a torque converter
more like vacuum leaks , injector problems , low fuel pressures

When putting van in gear the engine runs rough

how about putting the van in drive with one foot down hard on the brake and rev the engine, does it smooth out now? if it smooths out, i would pull the air cleaner tube to the throttle body and spray the throttle body with carb cleaner, be careful if using the red tube, I have had it blow off before into the intake, not good, open the accelerator and spray it out really good, it will to start until all the cleaner clears out.

If it ran out of gas you may have sediment in the fuel lines causing rough running which may trigger a transmission code due to improper vacuum due to the rough running.

When in gear can does not move

Check the transmission fluid, with the van at normal temperature and after runnig it through drive and revers a few times then place it in park and check it with the engine running,if it's down then top it up with chrysler type fluid and get the leak fixed,if it's not down on fluid then get a transmission shop to look at it.
