Why wont my life gate light go out - 2007 Jeep Compass Limited

I would start off with some WD 40 on the gate button and check the wires for corsion or bare wires touching, with the gate open the dome light comes on. Worst comes to worst get a new or used button at a junk yard.

the gate lock has issues, get it serviced.
if a DIY person? get the FSM and read that page. under body chapter.

it sounds like the striker might be out of adjustment, or a spring came loose or broke you can also try spraying some good penetrating oil due to the water that is kicked up from your rear tires will rust up these parts

check brake light switch seperate contacts regular brake lights & gate light

check for faulty switch in frame of gate may have pushed in and wont recognize it being shut

SOUND LIKE FAULTY LIFT GATE SWITCH.

Unlikely that the electric gates would cause the problem. You could try parking a bit further away from your house (friend ?) just to see if it makes any difference. Also, if you have the original battery it is probably coming to the end of its life cycle and may not hold a charge as well as it should, Even something as simple as dirty terminals can affect the starting efficiency.
The gates are operated by small electric motors that would only send out very minor frequencies and only when in operation. Very unlikely they would affect your car.

Open your life gate, take out the two screws holding that are holding the light in, pull away from car, if working on drivers side, pull to left and vice versa, twist out fitting for burned out light and replace.

You should be able to remove the trimpanel on the lift-gate. then at the location of the striker in the middle-bottom of lift-gate you should be able to access a rod. Grab the rod with pliers, if pliers won,t fit the rod connects to a metal lever attached to the striker assembly, pry the lever away from the striker and this should release you gate....Good Luck!!!

it may be that the gate has dropped on it's hinges, try lifting as you open. (i assume a side opening gate)
