I am trying to make sure my brake controller is properly wired. my brakes do not work automatically when I press the brake pedal,but do work when I manually use switch on brake controller.

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components.
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The brake switch
• The rear integration module (RIM)
• The transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
With the ignition ON, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid from the ignition 3 relay. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is controlled by the rear integration module. When the rear integration module (RIM) receives a class 2 serial data message from the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM) indicating that the shift lever is in the PARK position the rear integration module (RIM) grounds the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This causes the solenoid to energize mechanically locking the shift lever in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the rear integration module receives the brake applied signal and turns off the ground to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This allows the shift lever to be moved out of the PARK position.

Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed

Apply the parking brake and block the wheels.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position.

Turn OFF the ignition.
Install a scan tool.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
With a scan tool, observe the TCC brake switch parameter in the transmission data display list.
Press and release the brake pedal several times.
Does the TCC brake switch status turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal?
YES - Go to Step 4
NO - Go to Stop Lamps Inoperative in Lighting Systems

With a scan tool, observe the brake to shift control parameter in the rear integration module data list.

The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

When the transmission is in the PARK position the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.
Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed

My 2000 ford contour wont crank

Its possible that your Safety Interlock is causing these problems. Look and see if the Brake lights come on when you press the Brake pedal. If they do not, it is a sure sign that the switch on the Brake pedal lever is either broken or misaligned. It is a common problem for a Drivers foot to hit this control switch.

Some models are designed to either fail to crank or fail to shift out of Park unless the Brake pedal is pressed. The switch at the top of the Brake pedal lever sends the signal for either sysstem to work.

The starter solenoid will get a "tickler" charge on the small wire to the solenoid. If you find that the Brake switch is working, then check this small wire to the Solenoid with a Voltmeter. It should show Voltage when the Brake pedal is pressed and the Ignition Key is held to the crank position.

Sometimes you can bypass the Starter solenoid with 1 battery jumper cable mounted to the Battery side of the Starter solenoid and briefly touched the jumper wire to the starter side of the Solenoid. Make sure the trans is out of gear if this is a stickshift.

Fix cruise control switch on brake pedal

You'll need to repace the switch itself if it is defective. These are available at most auto-parts stores, and looking at the switch itself will help in determining what you actually need to do in removing it. It fits into a set position on the side of the dash nearest to the driver, just in front of the brake pedal arm, and is operated by pressing on the brake pedal, which causes the switch to make contact internally and pass voltage through to the brake light or to the cruise control system.

To remove, disconnect wiring harness, remove the front retaining nut and once it's removed, slide the switch out of the mount, just compare the new switch to the old one to make sure they are the same, then reinstall after putting the nuts & washers at approximately the same location on the new one, once installed, test the adjustment by making sure the brake light is not on without the brake pedal being pushed, then check the cruise control, it should engage properly as well as disengage when you press on the brake pedal. Adjustments are made by adjusting the mounting position either forwards or backwards with the mounting hardware.

If you are having problems with this, verify the voltage coming into one side of the switch with the pedal not being pressed, then the voltage should pass through the switch, when the brake pedal is pressed. On a dual switch (see below) ground voltage goes through the Cruise control part of the switch-depending on the model, but on either type, removing the connection from the switch and verifying continuity when the switch is activated will determine if it is working properly, as long as the switch breaks continuity when not being activated.

Some of these switches are dual purpose, working both the brake light and the cruise control, some are individual switches with one for each, and on some cars, the brake light switch works for both the cruise and the brake light.

Brake lights do not work checked fuses & changed baulbs

HI. The brake light switch may be the culprit here. This is located just under the brake pedal shaft. This switch can become unstable overtime if the structure is not sound, or defective. When inspecting, make sure the wire connectors are connected properly. Make sure the contacts are not corroded, or separated from the switch itself. You can also test the current by using a meter. Use one of the bulb housing clips, and attach the meter prongs to the connector prongs inside both of the brake light connector clips. While you allow your assistant to press the brake pedal, register the current level. If there is not a registered level present when the pedal is pressed replace the switch.


Note(To rule out a wiring harness issue, simply test the brake light switch for continuity)

no disrespect but....
Check the book and make sure you are using the proper bulbs on all sides. (3957 looks just like 3956 but wont work right)
