Your problem is NOT a fuse. The speedometer receives an electronic signal from an analogue transmitter mounted in the rear differential. It's the little button in the rear diff with two wires attached to it. Check to see if the wiring is chaffed or broken. If not, then it's probably the transmitter. A competent mechanic should be able to replace one for less than 200.00, parts and labor. If this does not fix it, then the problem is in the head, which can be expensive. You might get a used head if you can get a 90 day guarrantee on the part from the salvage company.

Good Luck!

SOURCE: 1991 Dodge Daytona Speedometer and Odometer not working.

I had the same problem with my 90 daytona. The tach and the speedometer would work intermitantly. I took the whole gauge cluster out, and heated all the soldering with a solder gun to reflow the connections. It seems that this is a common problem with the connections cracking. You may not be able to see the cracks in the solder.

SOURCE: Speedometer/odometer/cruise control isn't working.

It's your speed sensor at the transfercase on the drivers side i believe. Check the wire and clip to the sensor for any break or loose contacts.
Easy fix and is about a 30 min job to do with simple tools. Un-clip the wire conntection, remove the retainer bolt and slide and sensor out. To install just do everything in reverse and add transmisson oil if needed.

Most of the time, it's going to be the sensor. Keep in mind that there are two sensor's so make sure it's the one on the output shaft at the transfercase. The other one is closer to the front of the transmission on the same side with is the input Volosity speed sensor.
If it was your ABS sensor, you ABS light would come on in your dash.
Good luck and hope this helps

Speed sensor has failed.

It is basically a magnet sensor that reads the RPMs of the tranny.

It is screwed into the side of the transmission.

Do you have an aftermarket alarm installed, or remote start?
Sometimes those wires can be damaged if not installed properly.

It is $33.00 at autozone.

How do I check the instrument cluster on a 1996 dodge Dakota?

i believe it has a vehicle speed sensor in the rear diff that is probably your problem as the sensor you replaced in the transmission was probably the output shaft speed sensor

Transmission speed sensor

You could have a faulty speedometer/odometer combination meter causing a false Vehicle Speed Sensor error.
My 1998 Sienna had the following symptoms:
- Speedometer and odometer failed intermittently
- The check engine light would come on and I would get a p0500 code in the OBDII.
- The cruise control would stop working at the same time the speedometer failed.
There is a speed sensor in each one of the tires and they feed the speed information to the ABS ECU. From the ABS ECU the speed signal goes to the speedometer/odometer combination meter, and from there it goes to the Engine Control Module and to the Cruise Control ECU. I could see a signal coming into the speedometer/odometer, but no signal going out. Replacing the speedometer/odometer combination meter fixed the problem.

Need to replace odometer cable

A broken cable will have neither the odometer or the speedometer working. If your speedometer is working, then the odometer gears in the dash have stripped or come loose, and should be replaced. If the cable needs replacing, pull the cluster out of the dash and unclip the cable end from the speedometer, and unscrew the bottom fitting of cable from the transaxle.

Why does my instrument cluster not pull out, even after removing the screws from my 1993 dodge dakota, bulbs burned out and Im trying to replace them, any ideas anyone?

If my memory is correct, a 93 Dakota still has a speedometer cable which may be holding it from pulling out. Look under the hood at the firewall to see if there is a cable coming out in the engine compartment. If there is you will need to try and release it from the back of the speedometer or disconnect the opposite end at the transmission (or at the speed control servo if it has cruise control) so you can pull out the cluster with the cable attached.
