I have a 2000 Galant ES 4 cyl with 31,000 miles on it.
The a/c has stopped getting cold, the fan works on all speeds but I'm
not hearing the compressor, if that's what it's called, kick in.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?
I'm thinking that it should be something that would still be under
warranty and that the dealer should repair at no charge.
Thanks for any advice.
If you have to replace the a/c compressor, is that something any mechanic can do or do I have to find one specially certified? Just asking because I have the replacement a/c compressor, but not sure if I get it installed if it would require messing with the freon or not?

put a radiator flush in your expansion bottle .run it for about 20 miles. then drain and refill with 50/50 mix of anti freeze that will clean both core of your radiator and the heater core of dirt and rust. then bleed the air out. by turning the heater on full .run the engine with the expansion bottle cap off till you start to feel hot water at the hoses .then refit the cap.
Probably behind the camshaft sproket. Do you see any wireing going into the timeing cover? how hard is it to remove the top timeing cover & have a look should only be a few bolts
The probable causes are: 1. The drive belts are slipping. 2. The drive pulleys for some engine accessories are misaligned. 3. You have turned the steering wheel to the limits. 4. The drive belts are loose.5. Your brake drum backing plates are rubbing against the brake drum. The brakes also might be a problem. check the brake drums/discs. Finally check your wheel and wheel alignment.
Be gentle with my rating. I am a long ways away. It sounds like a fan belt. You should pop the hood next time and see how it sounds when you have the squeeling going on. Fan belts will squeel until the get warmed up and then stop because the heat makes them grab the way they are ment too. Let me know, Raz
Most likely the resistors are stuffed. Top speed the electricity goes straight to the fan motor. The other settings go via a resistor to slow the speed, hence the 3 speeds. So the resistor feed is main suspect
