1998 ford windstar with a bunch of different codes, they are P1744,P1537,1538,P0401,P0402,P0304. The problem that i'm having is the overdrive light on the shifter lever is starts blinking and then want shift into overdrive. I was wondering if maybe one of these could be causing the rest to show problems.

First check all spark plugs wires and boots the 0304 is a #4 cylinder misfire and if it's a +jumping to - this is affecting the other sensors a bad plug boot should be looked for and also check for cracked spark plugs at #4 cylinder next if you find that there's a leaking +to- antifreeze or oil leaking into that cylinder will cause it also and you have fixed the problem now disconnect the battery cables for 5 minutes and then reconnect them now turn your key to the on position to get the dash lights on but do not start the car and observe the lights if the check engine light goes out and abs and air bag now start the engine this is the self test mode for the obd system if the check engine light stayed on then there's still a bad sensor and read the codes again if your driving and the check engine light comes back on now do the same read the codes for other components that are bad the #4 misfire will definitely throw a bunch of codes because of the + leak to - and the other sensors here will be getting + voltage where there shouldn't be next if your getting the 0401-0402 that's the egr valve saying that it's insufficient first then excessive second the grounding could be frying that egr control solenoid next the 1537 &1538 are the intake manifold runners on both sides bank 1&2 cylinder head sides and could've been caused by the egr codes from the first problem next the 1744 is the torque converter clutch is stuck in the off position this can be also from the first problem but go to the transmission bulk head connector and unplug it and look for a fluid wet plug and connector or water from being loosely connected if water clean with denatured alcohol and let dry both sides bulk head and plug if you find fluid in the bulk head plug/connector you must drop the pan and change the bulk head and again clean the plug and change the transmission switches inside they are damaged from that same jumping off circuits from the fluid leak and also the water leak but maybe not you have to road test the van but I will tell you that the #4 cylinder misfire could be causing all the other codes but I wanted to include everything that's coming up because I am not there to check myself ok good luck Stephen

SOURCE: overdrive contoll button is blinking on 200 f-350 7.2 powerstroke

It sound is if your ABS/Speed sensor is the culpret.  Try this fairly inexpensive repair before you bring it in for a Diagnostic, which can run anywhere from $89.95 & up.  Go to the local ford dealer in your area and ask them for the ABS Sensor in your rear axle differential. The base part number being 9E731. This part runs roughly for about $20.00+ and your own time to replace it.

This blinking light indicates a problem. You will have to have it scanned for trouble codes to find out
what it is.

SOURCE: I have a '96 Ford Windstar 3.8L & getting OBDII P1537 code.

A common problem on Windstars, there are two IMRC valves, the only way to fix them is replacement, which is not that hard. They are mounted on the end of the intake manifold and control runner length. There is a front and rear one, I'm not sure which one this is but you'll probably have to go to Ford to buy it and they should be able to tell you with the code number. The problem will not affect driveability that much, but if you have emissions testing at your location, this will likely cause it to fail.

SOURCE: 1998 ford f150 triton shifts hard sometimes then

the overdrive light blinking indicates a mechanical or electrical failure in the trans, there will be a trouble code or codes stored in the computer control module of the system, have a OBD 2 self test to determine that code(s), it is key to deciding the problem with the trans, but it is lioely the trans will need an overhaul but that all depends on the malfunction code you get.

SOURCE: 2000 Ford Windstar 3.8L error P0401 then P0404

if the check engine light is blinking, you have a misfire(spark plugs, plug wires or coil pack.inspect the plug wires for damage. The rear bank plug wires (at the fire wall) get alot of heat and the boots will crack, causing a misfire. You might want to have your local shop check it for you,to see if there is an open circuit or shorting in one or more of the plug wires.if it has been awhile since a tune-up,you might want to do that first, and inspect the plug wire boots also and replace them if needed.

1998 Ford Windstar checked with a scanner code P1744 flashed, 2 weeks later. Van will not move, no grind to whinning nothing it has 205,000 mi

Code 1744 is for a problem with the torque converter clutch or solenoid. The components would need to be tested, which may require the transmission to be removed.

1999 mercury sable engine code p1744,p0401. Failed e check. EGR looks new, replaced egr solenoid then cleared codes. what more can i do about the p0401 code and the p1744 code Thanks

for p0401:
In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.
Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open.
Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits.
Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model).
Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one).
Replace the EGR valve.

1996 ford windstar 3.8 codes say that cylinders 4 and 6 are misfiring, system too lean bank 1,egr flow insufficient. whats up?

Cylinder misfiring hapens when ignition coil is bad and bad spark plugs.
System to lean is usualy when fuel pump lose pressure or you have blown gasket on intake manifold. Check fuel pressure first.
When EGR flow is insufficient there is EGR valve, sensor and solenoid, could go bad., so you have multiple codes P0171, P0304,P0306, P0401

98 windstar overdrive flashing

i recommend using a DTC reader to check the codes 1st but i suspect the transmission range sensor. it gives out due to a poorly placed master brake cylinder. the switch leaks and causes electrical problems with the TRS and other units connected in the wireing harness directly below the brake pressure switch.

Engine service light / 4 codes read description below

P1744 is probably the TC going on the way out. :(

P 340 is probably the sensor itself. Don't get the Dorman one if it is the OHV motor.

P 401 is probably a bad DPF EGR sensor.
