Clutch pedal goes completely to the floor and does not return unless I pop it back up manually. Does not work, no engagement, cannot start car or drive it.

Thanks, this is what the service dept. told me. They also said that the clutch itself may be damaged. That does not seem to be likely. What do you think?

  • toma_4 Apr 18, 2011

The dealer says the clutch save cylinder failed, and the brake master cylinder also. I don't understand how the brakes could still operate, though.

  • toma_4 Apr 19, 2011

I think it is difficult to diagnose a problem on-line. Although the answers I received we're somewhat helpful, I don't think the real problem was addressed. Maybe I asked the wrong questions. So thanks for your sincere efforts, but I now have to accept what the dealer has said and am picking my car up today. Maybe the mechanic can explain it to me.

Hello,

Obviously, the clutch cable has cut into two. The clutch cable needs to be replaced. Have the clutch cable replaced and everything is going to be alright.

Good luck.

Hi, I don't think this has anything to do with the break......... This is a clutch problem.

Maybe you try a local mechanic........

First thing that should be checked is the clutch fluid. Check if you need to add or for leaks in the line. There might be air in the system that needs to be bleed especially if there are replaced parts or the oil was replaced.
This could also be a problem with the clutch master (found at the opposite side of the clutch inside the engine bay where the oil is placed) or the clutch slave cylinder (attached to the transmission).
Below is the links on how to replace them. Copy and paste the link on you browser.
http://www.ehow.com/how_5167556_change-clutch-master-cylinder.html http://www.ehow.com/how_5894844_replace-audi-s4-slave-cylinder.html
Normally it is the clutch master that causes the issue but at times the slave cylinder may be affected as well. Make sure to have them bled after replacing.

If there is an issue with the clutch it would be hard to notice with the clutch master and slave issue. The actual pressure you feel on the pedal is from the pressure of the clutch master or the slave. These 2 components are usually cheaper than the clutch if I may add.

Need a clutch pedal diagram for a 1999 s10 2.2 4cyl manual trans

Sorry no diagram. But here is how it works. In the start position(Power) the wire goes to the start fuse, from the fuse it goes to the clutch pedal switch. Push the pedal and it goes to the starter relay. On the other end is ground. If it is good it pulls the relay closed. On the closed end is battery power to the starter.

Clutch pedal goes almost to the floor before it engages

If your fluid was low (which is why you likely added some,) you may need to "bleed" your clutch master cylinder.

My clutch pedal suddenly stuck to the floor but wont engage anymore. The cable seemed fine

As far as I can remember, the Jetta has a ball & socket linkage on top of the gearbox. This linkage eventually wear out & the ball will pop out of the socket thus giving you no clutch pedal.
Lift the bonnet & have a look on the right hand side of the engine, you should be able to see what I mean. Push the ball back into the socket & you'll get your clutch pedal back. Chances are the clutch will probably go again unless you replace the worn parts but they're a cheap enough fix.
Hope this helps, Stephen.

88 4wd subaru wagon manual trans will not engage gears....

not a clutch at this point but a faulty clutch master cylinder or faulty cable
replace the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder or the clutch cable
Indicates that if hydraulic the compensating port in the m/cyl is nor allowing oil to return to engage the clutch or if cable , the cable is shredding and locking in the outer case causing the same result

Clutch

believe it or not, the floormat on my 2000 Sunfire will sometimes slip forward and hold the clutch pedal down against the floor. It truly feels like a mechanical problem, but simply pull the floormat away and the pedal pops right back up!

Clutch goes to floor and stays

The trick to driving a manual transmission is giving gas very gently while letting the clutch up. The clutch only starts to engage when the pedal is about an inch and a half from the floor, so any gas you give before that will cause unecessary revving.
To get a feel for when the clutch engages, try the following excercise. Put the car in first gear and bring the clutch up ever so slowly without giving gas. At a certain point you will feel the clutch starting to engage and hear a difference in the sound of the engine. If you're bringing the clutch up too fast the car will stall. If you bring it up slowly enough the clutc will start to engage and you will begin to advance.
This excercise will develop your motor skill to manipulate the clutch effectively and will allow you to know exactly when to give gas when letting the clutch up.
