Golf mk2 1.8 rev counter progressively intermittent over 6 months interspersed with long periods of non operation, finally inactive. months later the mfa computer readout inactive. (clock readout ok)First hot weekend coincidental with reappearence of rev counter with mfa computer readout operative once more. No incidents of intermittent ops so far. cause not known or if and when old problem will reappear.

CHECK THE PRINTED CIRCUIT ON BACK OF CLUSTER & SEE IF VOLTAGE STABILIZER IS CONNECTED IT LOOKS LIKE A SMALL PITCHFORK

Your problem sounds as if the thermo sensor....which controls the air fuel ratio when engine is cold....is faulty. It is a common fault on this model.
This is not an expensive part, and takes only a short time to fit.

the computer is reset when the battery is disconnected, it takes a few days to relearn your driving habits for idle strategy only, it would have not affect on the cooling system of any kind. check and verify the engine cooling fan is running, if u have AC turn it on, this will cool the engine down and should engage the fan. Make sure that no connectors near the battery were left unplugged or accidentally unplugged.
