I looked into this a little deeper and found that a code 9 is the CYL Sensor. You are way off. I appreciate your trying to help, but if I had went through all you told me I would of still had the same problem. Im hoping that since you are wrong that I can get my money refunded to my card?

After reviewing the manuel for my 1990 Honda Prelude Si 4 whl steering, I have discovered that a code 9 is the CYL sensor. It has nothing to do with the VSS. I have actually fixed my car, the way the manuel told me to do it. I followed the necessary steps it told me to and my car is running very good now. So therefor I can not say I am satisified with your solution because if I had followed your solution I would of only created more problems for my car and myself.

My car is a 1990 Honda Prelude Si 4 whl steering 2.0 engine. The check engine light was on and it was flashing 9 red lights under the P/S floor board on the ECU. I was told that a 9 is the distributor so I changed it and that was not the problem. So that was a waste of time and money for me, but at the same time a learning experience because I am a female just learning about cars. One of your guys told me that a 9 flash is the VSS which also is wrong. Thank goodness I found the manuel and read it before I started messing with the VSS. The manuel said a 9 flash is the CYL Sensor. It gave me some steps to take and I followed them, so far so good. I reset my ECU after following the steps it said, and now my check engine light has went off. So if my manuel says its the CYL Sensor how do your people come up with the VSS ?

  • Anonymous Apr 16, 2011

I changed my distributor and it did not fix the problem as it was still doing the same thing.

  • Anonymous Apr 17, 2011

PGM-FI Control System......Trouble Shooting Flow Chart ......... CYL Sensor....Page 6-140 That is what I did to my car to fix it. Actually the P2 Connector was loose. Its housing is broke so it wont stay clipped in there. I plugged it back in reset the ECU and have had no problems since. Its not hesitating no more and the check engine light has went off and has not come back on. Im not sure what a CYP is, all I know is mine says the CYL Sensor. I dont know how to put it on the computer for you. I only know how to send as an attachment in email. If you would like me to do that I can, but I need an email I can reply to.

  • Anonymous Apr 17, 2011

I apoligize if they are the same. As I said I am just learning about cars. I am only going by what my book tells me. I did not see where it said CYP I only see a CYL . If they are the same then why didnt you just say that in the fist place instead of telling me that it is the CYP ? Look my argument here is not really with you, but with the first guy that answered my question. He was way wrong with his answer, very far off. It was not the VSS and Im sure you can see that very clearly. The other guy obviously does not know how to read the Honda book. Im sorry if it seems as though Im taking it out on you, but the only way I could get a responce was to ask another expert because he would not respond to my question.

  • Anonymous Apr 17, 2011

He also said it could be the distributor and that was wrong to.

  • Anonymous Apr 17, 2011

Ok I can understand what your saying. But if its not something they want to do, or if they are going to give wrong and I mean way wrong answers, then why are they doing it. If I had followed what he said I could of done more harm to my car, or maybe not. I really dont know. But I do know that I would of wasted a lot of time and possibly money. This is what he wrote me
The code 9 is for trouble with the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) circuit. Keep in mind that the speed sensor signal branches off to the speedometer, the Cruise Control unit the ECM (Engine Control Module) and the TCM (Transmission Control Module). You must have a wire or loose connection at the TCM, then I suggest check the connection of the white/blue wire at the TCM. It's an 18 pin grey connector. I'm not sure, but you might have to remove the TCM.

I will accept your solution if you can tell me who I can contact to talk about this with. I know 10.00 is not a lot of money, but when your a single mother as I am every penny counts. I am the only one that is working on my car so I was counting on the expert to help me out here. He didnt, he gave me a wrong answer all the way. As for you, you didnt. You were right and like I said I will accept your solution even tho I already fixed my problem before I asked you. I wanted to see if another expert would give me the same answer he did. And you didnt. If I ever have to use fixya.com again I would like to use your expertise for my questions about my car.

  • Anonymous Apr 18, 2011

I found a loose connection on the CYL sensor, I plugged it in and reset my ECU. My car ran great for a few days. Now its running bad again only its not throwing no code and the check engine light is not on. I dont get it. Ive changed the distributor and the cap, the spark plug wires because they were all mangled up inside the part that goes to the didtributor. My spark Plugs are all good. I will have the timing checked today, but I really dont think thats what it is. If the timing is ok, I just dont know what to do anymore. I cant afford to take it to a mechanic, and I cant figure it out. I sure hope you can help me thru this. What it is doing is it acts like it is running out of gas and it wants to go and it will if I keep pumping the gas, but it hesitates really bad. I changed the fuel filter and the fuel pump and it still does the same thing.Like I said it was running good for a few days, but now its doing the same thing only not throwing me a code and no check engine light is on.

Welcome to Fixya

Error 9 is definitely a CYL sensor problem. Please see this link. You may get this code also if timing is off at all at distributor this code gets thrown at random. I'm sure the timing belt is timed correctly but check to make sure the distributor isn't loose and its set in the acceptable timing range.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Timing has to be set properly to fully utilize the energy released by the combustion of fuel. If a spark is fired too early or too late, then all the fuel being injected is not utilized and goes to waste. Bad timing also affects the emissions from an engine.

Code 9 is a loss of signal from No.1 cylinder position sensor
which is referred to as the CYP sensor. The wire colors for this sensor are Orange and White, they go to ECM (computer) terminals B11 and B12. Below is a page showing the diagnostics for all the sensors, first make sure you have a good circuit to the CYP all the way to the ECM, if you do then the ECM is likely defective, this part runs around $300.00 in the aftermarket, so do your testing.
The repair manual page below may be hard to see, do this, copy the page to your picture file on your PC, then use the picture viewer to enlarge it. You can also use any photo program you have to enlarge it.

The page is from the Honda factory repair manual and it is called the CYP, not CYL sensor.

I am expert number three which means I will will get no credit for my efforts, the CYP and CYL are the same part. If you wish me to do more accept my solution, that way I will be rewarded for the considerable effort I have put out on this. You say you repaired the problem right? so what is it you need assistance on here??

That's ok, understand your frustration but my information was accurate. I am sorry about the other expert, but it is the weekend and all experts do this part time and are not employed by this website, we get a small dollar amount (Less and $5.00) for answering questions to a customers satisfaction. I would really be pleased if you gave me a "HELPFUL" rating for Fixya, I realy gave this allot of effort. I knew you most likely had a wiring problem which you did, make sure the connector is locked properly together at the Distributor.

If your Honda code 9 problem is fixed whay do you keep asking for more experts to assist, I am sorry don't get this, Is it some kind of test survey you are running? I gave the right answer, wiring issues, but still you reject the solution when you knew it was correct. Sorry just don't get what it is you are after here?? You can request a refund anytime you know, no questions asked. I am not on this site to play games, I try to help and for the most part I do.

Hi

Heck this link bellow to get what is code 9 mean. http://3gprelude.tripod.com/tech/ecucode.html

However it means No.1 cylinder position sensor. Actually it's your distributor, buy a new one or check which part it is damaged in there. It is most likely your ignition module inside your distributor. check the wiring on sensor inside and out. While you have the cap off is it oil inside the sensor?? If so replace the internal seal or Worst case, replacing the distributor housing (and not the whole distributor) fixes it.

Also check this link bellow for more info:-

Check the pin in connector at distributor known to rust or back out.

This code is pointing to a fault in the TDC Sensor (aka Crankshaft sensor, aka CYL sensor). This sensor, contained in the distributor housing, consists of three rotors, TDC, CRANK, and CYL, their associated pickup coils, and a common shaft. You can remove the distributor and take it apart and rebuild it, or it may just be easier/cheaper to replace the entire distributor at once. Some images need to click for zoom...

Could be your distributor, buy a new one or check which part it is damaged in there.

it is most likely your ignition module inside your distributor.

Need to find obd in 1990 honda accord

TROUBLE CODES System Diagnosis READING CODES When the "Check Engine'' warning light on the dashboard comes on and stays on, it indicates a problem in the fuel injection/emissions system. Check the ECU for fault codes. On certain models, some codes will not trigger the check engine light; if driveability has suffered, check for stored fault codes. The most common error when using fault codes is to assume the indicated component has failed rather than checking the entire circuit. The presence of a trouble code means simply that the electrical circuit for the named component is not functioning properly. For example, a code for the oxygen sensor circuit does not automatically mean the oxygen sensor has failed. A wire terminal may simply be loose or corroded at the connector. When using diagnostic or fault codes, always remember that the entire circuit including the component must be checked carefully. On 1990-95 Accord (except V-6) and 1992-95 Prelude, the codes are read from the check engine light after the two-wire service connector has been jumpered. On Accords, the service connector is under the dash on the passenger side. On Preludes, it is located behind the center console. Codes 1 through 9 are indicated by a series of short flashes; two-digit codes use a long flash for the first digit followed by the appropriate number of short flashes. For example, Code 14 would be indicated by 1 long flash followed by 4 short flashes. Codes are separated by a pause between displays. Multiple codes are transmitted in an alternating pattern. For example, a code 3 and 14 would be displayed as 3 short flashes (for Code 3) followed by the separator pause, then 1 long flash and 4 short flashes (for Code 14). Fig. 7: Fault codes are read from the check engine light on most late-model vehicles 86804048.gif
Fig. 8: On Accords, the service connector is located under the dash on the passenger side 86804049.gif
Fig. 9: The service connector on Preludes is located behind the center console 86804050.gif
  1. Use a jumper wire to connect the two terminals of the service connector together.
  2. Turn the ignition switch ON; the check engine light will display any stored codes by rhythmic flashing. NOTE: In the event that a code is encountered which is not on the chart, re-count the number of flashes. If the code is truly wrong, it will be necessary to swap the ECU for a known-good unit and recheck. Since this can be expensive, you may wish to bring the car to a reputable repair facility if no other cause of the failure can be found. This may save you the expense of purchasing an unnecessary part.
  3. If no codes are displayed but a driveablity problem exits, testing of the system individual components is necessary to find the problem. If codes are displayed, follow the appropriate troubleshooting chart in this section. Fig. 10: Fault code chart for 1990-93 Accords 86804051.gif
Fig. 11: Fault code chart for 1994-95 Accords (four cylinder) 86804052.gif

Where is the transmission dipstick on a 1990 honda prelude si

I only know about the dipstick for the automatic transmission.
It is located to the passenger side of center and is burried dwon very deep - you almost have to reach full-arms-length down, between hoses and air duct to reach it. It has a wire loop handle usually covered in orange/yellow rubber. All total it is about 6 inches long when removed. It is so hard to find that I thought mine was missing and bought another one before I found it.
