How do I find out if my Geo Tracker engine is an 8valve or 16valve?

the instructions on all new gates belts have that, and Dayco.

G16 a engine or B engine, the steps are different,
the 8valve ""A" engines needs valves lash set very loose.
G16A (TBI engine 8v) black top engine.

they used the cam cog wheel on 2 engines, one 3 cylinder other 4.

the tracker the GM badged car has a vin that tells what engine,
vin 6 or VIN U
6 is for 16 valves
and a GM RPM tag on the glove box.
LS5 = 8v
LO1 = 16v

make sure the bottom crank bolt 17mm head is at
94ft/lbs first or BOOM.

ok , its a 60k mile service and you skipped the 60k,,
and is normal doing that.

first the cam must be timed, or spark is hopeless , due to its being end if the chain if events.
so, is cam belt fresh, 60kmiles or less.
its timed at #4 firing.

cam marks #4 firing.
distributor marks are #1 firing,
on all 3 engine, early 90s classes.
the cam cog wheel on your year, will have false markes
and is covered here, totally. (avoid "I" marks)

how old is the fuel?
the pump/reg holds 34-43 psi.at all times...running.
sputter, from too low RPM ? below 800
or idle fast, but sputters at 800 and more?
if the latter, that is called misfire.
if the former that is lost of idle controls.
need to now which engine. because the are worlds apart.
EFI wise !

when was the last time it ran good,?

timing belt lasts 100k and then slips.
loses power
or
bad MAF sensor.

bad fuel pressure due to bad pump or regulator on front of rail.

can be many many thing , but this is 3 reasons.

1,3,4,2 for the 1.6 liter SOHC L4 engine. from the front of the vehichle the cylinders are 1234 ,front to back

they can be either.

but there are 50 things that can kill idle.
air leaks
ISC valve stuck
ignition timing too far advanced a idle.
and many more
tell more , get more.

dead Injector 8valve.

use a NOID lamp to see if ECU is pulsing this
injector.
