2004 Dodge Ram with 129K ran differential low on fluid and it has a whining noise. Filled with fluid but the noise is still there and seems to be getting louder. What is making the noise in your opinion ?

    is it ok to let it go ? what happened was the front seal let most of the fluid leak out so slowly that it never dripped on the driveway but caked up underneath until I noticed when driving it back from Houston Texas it started whining....now it just whines and it's full of Lucas....How long would you imagine it will last without a rebuild as long as I keep it full of oil ?

Could be pinion bearings, differential side bearings, axle bearings, ring and pinion mating, or any combination of the above. Very complicated stuff. Leave it to a pro.

Gears inside the Diff. Since it was low on fluid for a while it probably got overheated. Overhauling it will help.

How do i check the rear differential fluid on a 2004 dodge 1500 Hemi.
All differentials have a provision to check that. Usually you will find a rubber plug in the cover or a access port in the housing with a male or female 1/2" wrench attachment provision. (basically a pipe plug) Always check on level ground. Fluid should be just at or slightly below the hole.(use your finger or a pencil as a dipstick.)

2004 dodge ram rear end noise
while you had the cover off did you by chance look at the condition of the ring gear and spider gears...if it was run for any length of time low on fluid or with two different sized tires you may need some repairs but first inspect the ring gear and rotate till you can see the 4 little beveled gears inside the differential ....use a screwdriver and check for excess movement...look at the crossshaft and look for wear.....hope this points you in the right direction.

Hello! This could be from a few things - you could have a differential pinion gear that is misaligned and that will cause a howling noise - or it could also be a wheel bearing. Check your differential fluid and it might be worthwhile changing it.

Rear end noise when i let off the throttle
Check the U joints, there more common to go bad then the differential, unless you are low on differential fluids. You can take it to a drive line shop and have them replace the u joints and differential fluid and also have them readjust the ring and pin in the differential to give you more life out of the rear end. if you have limited slip, make sure you have fresh fluid and limited slip additive. does the differential whine or make noise? if so thats a dead giveaway of a bearing or gear problem, look for metal debris or chunks when you pull the diff cover off

If your certain the noise is from the transmission, you need to take this vehicle to a shop you trust. It sounds as though the fluid pump in the transmission is either starving for fluid, due to a blocked strainer, or the pump is suffering a bearing failure. If you continue to run this vehicle, you stand the chance of stranding yourself, or burning the clutches from a lack of fluid. Good Luck.
