The timing marks are on the timing cover just above the crankshaft pulley(harmonic balancer)and can be seen with a light either forward or rearward of the top of the pulley.the mark on the pulley is usually just a slot(groove) cut into the pulley that you line up with the marks on the timing cover showing the degrees of timing,note there is before top dead center and after top dead center timing marks shown and the marks that you use is before top dead center.
