I have a volvo s40 2.0t se the other day after i came back from a trip it was on tic over out side the house wen the temp gauge droped to cold and the revs went up to 1200 and a strong smell of fuel was noticable since then wen i start it from cold the radiater fan comes on straight away and the temp goes straight into the red from being cold also the engin managment light stays on if you rev it up the revs stick and you have to turn it of then it strugles to start but does and there is a stong smell of fuel any idea would be gratfully recived as i have owned this car for 2 weeks and only driven it twice thanks

First things first. Check your coolant level. If that is up to snuff, then have the engine data scanned, and see if your coolant temp sensor is out of whack. If it reads very low, the pcm will give the fuel management system directions to add alot of fuel. However , as I mentioned before, low coolant can cause the temp sensor to read a cold engine(it usually must be submerged in coolant) and cause the same problem. There are more things to check, but this is the place to start. If you have no luck with these suggestions, get back to me and we'll go furthur. Good luck!

If I had a 1998 car with 218K miles on it and an unimportant thing like the trip meter didn't work I would put a piece of black tape over it and use a GPS as my trip meter.

Temperature gauge stuck
1) Coolant sensor connections broken - this is the first one under number 4 cylinder, intake side. Coolant temp sensor could be faulty. Test by unplugging sensor, connect a 68 ohm resistor to one of the terminals and ground it to the block. Meter should read 3/4 to max. You might need to probe either wire for the correct one. If the gauge works, the sensor is faulty.
2) If the gauge doesn't work, then either the gauge or its circuit is open - the gauges are wirewounds, so they seldom fail.

Heat goes in and out and the temp gauge goes up and down
Your temp sensor has nothing to do with your heater. The temp sensor needs coolant in order to work properly. So first check the coolant level because if it is low your heater will act the way you describe. Once the coolant gets low enough the heater will blow cold. Another possibility is the radiator cap. After the engine has warmed up it expands when it cools down it contracts. As it is contracting if the cap is weak air can be drawn into the system and cause air pockets to form and will cause the same problem

There are two sensors connected to the thermostat housing and i need to know which sensor is which and what they control. on cold days i cant get started
The larger of the two is the coolant temperature sensor. The other is the actual gauge temperature sensor. The coolant temp. sensor gives information to the cars computor & when the car reaches a predetermined temperature, the computor changes the ignition timing allowing the car to run at normal operation temperature settings. The temperature sensor gives info to the dash board gauge &/or temp. warning light. The reason you can't start on cold days is that your coolant temp. sensor is stuck in advanced mode & the timing is to far advanced . To remedy this problem change the coolant sensor. Good luck!

check it for a short in the wiring harness , check the trans temp with a laser pointer thermo gun before you leave and then after a drive , or when it goes haywire .
sounds like a bad sensor , or may be a sort .

Location of thermostat and replacement
Finding the thermostat is easy. Just follow the top radiator hose back to the engine.
The question I have is how to get to the bottom screw of the thermostat housing.

Any Sugustions anyone?
