Telescoping steering wheel

I have a 1996 Lexus LS400 and my telescoping steering wheel has begun to stop repositioning itself when vehicle is turned off. It only returns slightly to original position and I have to keep turning the vehicle on and off until it completely returns to the upright position when off. How do I fix this problem?

I have a similar problem, except when I turn the car off the wheel goes to the normal position and when I start the car again, it won't telescope, but it only does this when I leave the car in the hot sun. After it cools during some driving, it slow will telescope back out if I keep trying the button.

Open the gear motor on the left hand side of the telelscopic assembly. Take the plate off held by 4 philips screws. Using a 10mm socket, remove the bolt holding the platic gear. Remove plastic gear and insert the reverse way. Over the years, one side of the gears get worn out.

slide the lower part of shifter handle down and you will find two screws, but there is 2 wires coming in from center console for overdrive button.you have to remove the center console cover and remove the 2 wires from connector and then pull up threw handle.when you go back together you will have to guide them back threw the handle.

Yes it would be perfectly ok to disegauge the auto switch to keep it from moving again. It needs a tilt motor replaced . not a easy job.

Not too bad. Not much room, just enough to drop the starter. It is probably easier to go up through exhaust if you can get your exhaust shield off the manifold .

Is there a separate steering gear for the up and down and telescopic on 1994 Lexus ls400?

No. There is only one steering gear. The telescoping steering column is self contained and functions the same as a vehicle without the telescoping feature.

Left front wheel on 1992 Lexus LS400 wobbles from time to time. Stop car and then drive on and no more wobble until next time.

Could be a bad tire. The cords could be separating.
Check for bad front bearings as well.
Also check for shot steering things such as rack and pinion.

Lexus LS400 with 80000 miles. Bpught is used and ever since ther steering wheel feels very loose is this the norm maybe im used to driving a van in which the wheel is much tighter? thanx for your help

Hi,
Both your Van and your Lexus have power assist steering. So the "feel"
will be somewhat different. How quickly and easily the "Assist" helps varies. The Lexus is an Luxury car.It is designed to make steering easier.
Less effort needed by you turning the wheel to turn the car. So you were right in your diagnosis. The Van will have a heavier feel.
Enjoy the ride.
