We found the problem by taking the truck to the dealership, after spending $550.00 on parts and having everything we could remove tested or we purchased them new and replaced them. We spent two weeks on it and took it to Chevrolet but it took them three days after all we had done, the problem turned out to be the gear on the distributor, sure we replaced every part in it but because we could not get the distributor out with the intake on it we had not even considered the gear, thanks for your assistance and maybe we'll try you again next time....Thanks again.
Thanks alot for the info listed here, I had the same problem Engine turns but won't start and first bought a crank shaft sensor $75 and that wasn't the problem, next I bought a new distrubutor $120 and that was it !!!! My truck was fixed, Its a 1997 chevy silverado w/249,000 miles and is still going strong now, Thank you guys for your input.
The problem with my chevy distributor is after wear and tear it seperates at the gear at the bottom of the shaft approx 1/4 inch or so and causes it the jump and causes misfire of timing and my new distrubtor does not have that gap and after replacing it started right up. Thanks

I have a 1997 3500 pickup that will not start, We have replaced everything in the engine compartment that has to do with the engine running but we still have an erratic spark that just randomly fires which ever plugwire it wants to. We have a code reader testing the codes after every crank but it doesn't show anything different, it comes up occasionally with a random cylinder missfire but the thing should say random cylinder fire because it does not fire enough to run. We have replaced all the sensors, everything in the distributor, new plugs and wires, checked every wire and connector in the engine compartment, had the ecm tested by a hi performance programming station but all they could tell us was that all the information they fed to it it took which to them meant that it was working, does that mean that it's good and that it should run, they say yes but it still fires
erratic and does not start.
Any help you can give us we would appreciate. Thanks.
My distributor is new We replaced everything else as well. I still am not getting any fire to the plugs. However when you crank it over it sounds as if it is trying to start. I believe the problem started with the previous owner It backfired and sheared the pin on the distributor gear. he replaced it and could not get it to start. I bought it and tinkered and got it started (don'[t know what I did) then about a week later it died took it to dealer they replaced coil it ran for about a month then died again. replaced everything cam shaft sensor. crankshaft sensor. coil, ignition module.still nothing.
