My daughter's 96 Jeep Cherokee will not start. It turns over, but will not start. Gauges don't work, all lights, radio, blowers will work. Had the ECU replaced..... this is costing me a fortune! WHAT could be wrong????
I just had the same exact problems as zeeladys. It was the crank sensor shorting out and causing the short to shut down circuits in the pcm, volt gauge, fuel gauge, no spark. Locate the connector to the crank sensor, it runs beside the distributor, with the key to the on position unplug the connector and see if the gauges come back on. If so, simply replace the crank sensor and ur off and running
Hi there Zeeladys,
We could go over all sorts of 'what if' scenarios, but who has the time?
Why don't we get the Jeep to tell us what's wrong?
Your Jeep has on board diagnostics that can help locate problems it is having. These diagnostics are normally accessed by a 'Code Reader' that you can buy for $60.00 to $100.00 and use once. OR.... you can do it manually, which will only cost you about ten minutes of your time. Here's how.
First off, what to expect:
Are you ready?
When you finish, get back to me with the codes. They should tell us whats going on. Then we can act accordingly.
Don't worry, I'll get you back on the road.
Mike
I had the same problem , I asked my brother in law ( a ASE certified mechanic ) , he informed me that the crank sensor is usually the culprit. a trip to auto zone and $66.85 later I was home replacing the unit. One clip to the wiring harness and 2 bolts to the bell housing and I was done. about 15 minutes . she started right up and has been running like new. all I can say is ( it worked for me ! )
That I got code "33" you e=mail me the answer to [email protected]
May be you should check the injektors power cables and ,also check the spark plugs cables
I didnt have spark i changed my crank sensor wich is rough to get to didnt help than found the injector wires were grounding out on the exaust down where you cant see them fixed them re routed them back in action

I'm having the same problem with my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. One day it was working and the next day I got in it and it wouldn't start. It turns over but is not getting fire. The instrument guages don't always work either. Unfortunately we replaced the battery thinking it wasn't getting enough charge to start the vehicle. The diagnostic codes were erased when we did this so there is not help there. Also, when it was running, the windshield wipers would turn on when I turned on the blinkers, sometimes the passenger windows (front & Back) won't go up or down and my keyless entry fob doesn't work anymore, and yes I have replaced the batteries.
Hi -
Having trouble starting a 96 jeep cherokee sport, automatic, 6 cyl 4.0.
Similar to previous Zeelady's problem other than-
Problem began as the car wouldnt turn over, after a numerous stop and start day, meant to wake up and tow to shop next day, though a sunday. Sunday, now it starts, but wont hold an idle.
Car has been relatively trouble free, but when first purchased 2001, (with 90,000 miles) one time the car wouldnt start or turn over, it was a computer problem which involved a switch, cost 500 dollars, but worked ( till now). There was also a free computer reprogram from the local dealer, who now is belly up.
We read the answer to Zoolady's problem with interest, and Mike's answer about the codes and how to access them by turning ignition on and off, watching recording the "check engine" lights.
I did so and got- code 35, then a 5 (a single digit, verified twice though I know Mike said two digits is what to look for).
( flash flash flash- pause- flash flash flash flash flash- longer pause- flash flash flash flash flash) Please let me know what this means, and Thank you for sharing your expertise!

I have the same problem with my 96 JGC. It will run fine for awhile and then it will stall at a red light, I am able to restart after one or two tries. It idles at 800 rmps while at a light. Please help.
I get no codes when I turn on and turn off the ignition three times as suggested by Mike.
I have a 97 wrangler, It was working fine until I went to start it the other day after work. The gas gauge wont work nor will the amp gauge. It cranks but wont start. I left it and tried it the next day. After a few attempts it started but now its dead again.
hi i have a 96 jeep i love it wouldnt start i was driving kinda fast then it shut down i checked all the fuses under the dash and under the hood only one was blown 30 amp under the hood i replaced it then tried to start it again it blew again and still no spark i didnt know if that was the problem or not so i checked to see if i had spark to my coil and i didnt so i thought the problem was before the coil so i looked for a direct short couldnt find one so i replaced the crank shaft sensor still no spark i need my jeep for work so it went to my friends shop im kinda jealous i dont like any one touching my jeep but me anyway he re placed the distributor wich it probibly might of needed sooner or later still no spark than he was doing something with the injector wires and discoverd that down the wires where you cant see the wires were routed to close to the exhaust and were grounding out i dont know if this is a factory mistake or a dumba work but he re routed the wires after fixing them replaced the 30 amp fuse and we go out together every chance we get my point is it might be some thing you wouldnt expect sometimes problems hide behind the obvious i hope this helps or even makes sence for that matter heartagold
